Bug Description

Running http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/System/SuspendResume in Quantal laptop testing.

Successful suspend; on pressing power button, LightDM session login locks - mouse moves but no selection possible; no cursor, unable to type into password box. 20-30 second delay then flips to terminal tty session displaying:

* Stopping System V run level compatibility
* Starting

20-30 second delay then flips back to locked LightDM login screen.

Cycles through, had to pull the power and restart.

Do you know if this issue happened in a previous version of Ubuntu, or is this a new issue?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.5kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Got that issue today, doing:

- live usb : from precise i386 (full upgraded) and unetbootin (568-1 from ppa)
- stick formatted as fat32
- selected iso: daily live (quantal i386 Sept 15)
- unetbootin installation well done

- booting with that stick on an other pc: i get first a garbage coloured screen (might be related to lightdm), then the process continue in a loop, alterning garbage coloured screen and that error:

[drm] nouveau 0000:06:00:0: failed to idle channel x (x= 1/2/3 in a loop)

More comment about : [drm] nouveau 0000:06:00:0: failed to idle channel x (x= 1/2/3 in a loop)

as my previous workaround with unetbootin, i've tried something new (multisystem) and again the same error while trying to boot quantal: coloured bands garbage then the drm nouveau issue. Finally found that adding nomodeset as grub setting let the process ending cleanly. So it might be a regression with some latest package upgrades.

I tested kernels 3.6.3, 3.5.7 and 3.4.15 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/, as per comment #3.

3.6.3 fails with message "reloc wait_idle_failed: -16).

3.5.7 fails with the reported message ("Failed to idle channel...")

3.4.15 works OK.

Affects me as well.

System: Ubuntu 13.04 installed on harddrive
Dual Boot: Yes with Win7
Machine type: Desktop PC
CPU: Intel Core i7 950 @3.07Ghz (8 core total)
HD: 1TB, 150Gb for primary linux partition, 10Gb for Swap (partitions done by the installer). Those are /sda5 and /sda6
RAM: 10Gb
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460

After suspend and restart, I get garbage on screen (patchwork of previous stuff I had on screen) and the after some seconds the message "Failed to idle channel 1" on a black shell screen, then the patchwork image comes up again, then shell after some seconds, etc... After about 5-6 "Failed to idle channel 1" the screen goes completely black and no way to recover.

Here is more information about my system.

Robin Catling, as per http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/Product/inspiron-6400x an update is available for your BIOS (A17). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.
