Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 (fully updated) and the wireless connection keeps dropping. It appears to be connected in Network Manager but I'm unable to reach any web pages or the admin page of my router.

Clicking on the network manager icon and selecting my network re-establishes the connection which is fine for about half an hour then it drops again.

The only difference in my case is disconnecting and reconnecting in Network Manager makes no difference. Have to log out and back in to reconnect the connection. But Network Manager shows the WiFi signal is strong at all times and other devices can use the internet, just my two 12.10 machines experiencing issues.

Running multimedia ubuntu 12.10 with all "automatic" fixes applied on a newer toshia laptop. The symptoms I see are as follows:

- I can access network from home network and maintain connection using my cisco based wireless router.
- When accessing network from other wireless network routers, it connects to the network and will work for a few seconds (or minutes) and then the browser begin to show "waiting for", "looking up...", etc. and eventually gives up with such messages as "cannot find" or "cannot access...". The wireless network icon still shows connection - showing 3 bar signal.
- When Ithis happens, I can usually click on the wireless network icon, disconnect, then connect to the same network and press "try again" on the browser. Connection again stays up for seconds to minutes.
- After a few disconnect/reconnect iterations, it seems that reconnection does not work. After rebooting, I can reconnect - but again, the same symptoms.
- One of these other wireless connection uses a DLINK router - probably older version.
- I have not experenced this problem when I boot up with Windows 7.
- I can provide other information if requested.

Note that I tried to use WICD instead of network manager and I have the same issue. The only difference is that WICD tells me that I am disconnected when my connection drops. Network manager on the other hand tells me that I am still connected. Reconnecting fixes the issue (temporarily)

I don't have that problem at all when I use an ethernet cable.

Finally, this problem only started to show up a couple of months ago, before that everything was working fine with 12.10.

I have the same symptoms using Linux Mint 14 so I am guessing this is the same issue.

I too have experienced this since the 12.10 upgrade. I have a wirless switch on the front of my laptop that I switch to the off position for a few seconds and then back on again and it remakes the connection without having to log out.

I just did a fresh install of elementary OS on my desktop PC. Now I have the same issue.
I had eOS installed a few days ago, and everything worked normally. Before I reinstalled, I had Xubuntu 12.10, where everything worked aswell.

My laptop also works flawlessly and is running eOS aswell.

I also have the same issue, however if I go under the network manager and disable the wireless, wait 10 seconds, then enable the wireless I am reconnected.

I am running 12.10 fully patched on an HP dc7800p with a Trendnet TEW-423PI PCI wireless card.

The behaviour of the network manager seems to have changed sinced my last comment. Now I actually see the connection dropping and network manager reconnecting. Previously, the wireless connection would drop but network manager would tell me that I was still connected.

I had the same bug where network connection was dropping while browsing and fixing it by reconnecting. My problems where solved by using chromium in stead of firefox. I can't reafirm this because i downgraded to 12.04.

I followed Reint advice and switched to Chromium. It improved things a lot. My connection now rarely drops.
