Bug Description

Update the icons used for the Software Centre, Nautilus, and Software Updater to the new icons supplied in the attached file "Nautilus_USC_Updater_new_icons.zip".

When any of these three applications are running, the Launcher tiles they are mounted on should be illuminated in the following colours:
Nautilus: #af4853
Software center: #ffbf87
Software updater: #4c9e39

(Note this functionality was added to the Launcher in Unity 6.0 as a result of bug #962120)

So, packages shipping Nautilus, Software Center and Software updater should define in their .desktop file the proper X-Unity-IconBackgroundColor field with the mentioned colors.

------------------------------------

This change is part of a larger set of Launcher icon changes, see attached image "preview-new-launcher-icons.png" for how the launcher will appear when the full set of changes are made.

The other bugs that are part of this same change request are:

bug #1081704 (Dash - update the 'App Lens' icon asset in the Dash bottom lens nav bar)
bug #1081702 (Update the default wallpaper in 13.04)
bug #838854 (Workspaces, Launcher - The workspace Launcher icon should change depending on which workspace is currently being utilised)

The green for the Software Updater tile is rather unusual as the icon itself doesn't use green at all, and purple for the Files tile is also a bit strange.

I think the static "progress bar" on the Software Center and Updater icons is rather confusing. How will those work when there is an active progress bar?

But at least these designs are plenty early, so there's time to try them out! :)

Wikipedia "Computer icons":

This 'A' thing with or without progress-bar is not language-independent at all and you are not going to make language-specific icons for all supported languages, are you?

Furthermore it's "Ubuntu Software Center" and not "Ubuntu Applications Center". Why "A" at all?
It's wrong even if we put aside previous problem (#5).

about the updater icon, i hope it is not final.. i would like to have it icon dynamically ..ie.. colorless when no updates are needed, green color plus badge count .. I feel it does not need 'A' and i suggest 'screen with the package' icon inside the update circle, it means it look as a software updater across the devices( in my opinion these devices have screens ,, ie mobile, desktop, tablet)

So, are there going to be different versions with alternative letters for each supported language in Ubuntu?
Like "O" for Finnish and "P" for Spanish, etc.
Or how are the translator teams supposed to cope with this?

First of all: what the "A" is suposed to mean? Applications? Do you really
think users will understand that?

And, even if they understand, non-English users won't. In Portuguese,
"Programas" doesn't start with "A".

Hans Heintze (hansheintze1) wrote :

I agree that the "A" is a bit confusing, perhaps you could use lens-nav-app.svg from the unity visual assets. This would give us greater consistancy across the OS and stop the icon from being language specific.

you can grab the asset here:

You have seen me in two bugs here (or probably 3) and already made such conclusion! And like I have to care do you like quotes from wiki or not. Fascinating…

Icons must be language-independent. It's just common sense and A letter on these icons have no meaning at all. It clearly fails to represent Ubuntu Software Center. As contributor to localizations and translations you have to understand this even better then I do.

@Hans Heintze:
Nice idea to solve this issue you have here! I do agree with it.

The "A" definitely needs to replaced with some language independent visual indicator like the one specified by @Hans Heintze.

Could whoever came with the X-Unity-IconBackgroundColor idea give details on:

- where it was discussed

- why is it needed (is the current algorythm not good enough, can we fix that)?

- what number of .desktop you envision to see patched this way?

Did you consider that hardcoding a color probably works with a specific icon, what if somebody changes the icon theme from the default one? That would probably make the color wrong...

Jeremy,
We already do add color icons in ubuntu-mono for a few apps. Ex: Nautilus > 'system-file-manager', 'user-desktop' .
We do that so that these changes affect Ubuntu only and not other downstream distros which might use Humanity.
Also, these icons are most probably proprietary, so we do not want to add these icons to Humanity and change the licensing/authors/etc..
