Bug Description

When installing third-party packages that depend on ntfsprogs and support multiple Ubuntu versions, the dependency check fails on Raring Ringtail since the ntfs-3g package does not indicate it replaces ntfsprogs (source: aptitude show ntfs-3g). I suspect this was overlooked in Raring as ntfsprogs was dropped (not provided) in Raring. Unfortunately, some third-party packages will still address ntfsprogs for sometime and it would be helpful if ntfs-3g would satisfy the dependency.

I have filed a bug with the third-party provider as well.

In the mean time you can create a dummy ntfsprogs package with: equivs

I had already created the dummy package to avoid the problem.

Actually ntfs-3g package dates back to Lucid or further. So I don't think it makes sense to keep the compat provides anymore. I've fixed remaining packages in the archive that still did that now.

The thread says the fix was released nine months ago. I'm in GNOME Trusty trying to manipulate an NTFS partition in GParted that is marked with a problem (altough Windows 8.1 finds no problem), and the bug is there. The po-up window I see implies I need ntfsprogs, but it is not in the Trusty sources.

When I try "apt-get install ntfsprogs", I get:
"Package ntfsprogs is not available, but is referred to by another package."
