Bug Description

Installing OEM version from Gutsy Tribe2 (normal text mode install completes fine). Checksum [C0E27ED0214BE17219449419335C7C6E] was verified, cd passed "Check CD" as well. Installation progresses rapidly then begins to stall about 81% [Installing the kernel - retrieving and installing linux-generic ...] Ctl-Alt-F4 indicates repeated: atkbd.c: Spurious NAK on isa0060/serio0. Some program might be trying to access hardware directly.

It happens using ISO image and physical CD.

FYI: I just had this exact problem installing from CD the released version of Gutsy (7.10) Kubuntu-Alt trying to install on an old Compaq Deskpro EN. It stalled for several (five?) minutes with no disk (HDD or CD) activity, but then something "timed out" and installation continued.
So it may be sort-of fixed, but anxious people may abort the install prematurely if they don't wait until whatever it was times out.

I can verify that 7.10 Kubuntu-Alt Halts (at 83% in my case) as described above. In my case for about 15 minutes. PIII 128Mb RAM so it might be due to low resources. Kubuntu regular wouldn't install at all.

Same here for both the live cd install as well as x86 alternate of gutsy. And yes it hangs for 15 minutes or so and continues. Not a show stopper; at least for me.

Ubuntu 7.10 Alternate AMD64 hangs at 83%, whilst "retrieving kernel-generic", for over an hour on my Intel Q6600, 4 GB RAM, nVidia 8600GTS before I force reboot. It was running Ubuntu 7.04 32-bit with no problems so I'm trying again with fixed IP. There is a graphics issue with the Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64 Live CDs - they just hang flicking a cursor between two points at the upper left of the monitor.

Why is the install process fetching the kernel from the Internet? Installing a kernel from the CD would be quicker and less likely to crash. The updated kernel can be installed via Update Manager or Synaptic Package manager. What happens if I disconnect the Internet connection before starting the install?

This happened on all the old Alternate-Install CD's. If I remember correctly it has something to do with setting a static IP address. I did once have a workaround (by dropping to a 2nd tty and doing something) but for the life of me I can't remember what it was.

This bug was present in Breezy and I am shocked to see that it still exists in Gutsy.... not cool.

It hanged for about 10 minutes at 83% (installing linux-generic). I was installing Fluxbuntu Gutsy in VMWare Server with the alternate (text based) install CD. I just let it go and it went in the end. No force reboots.

I tracked down the bug to be a BIOS issue. Updating the motherboard BIOS
allowed the installation to go ahead without any problems. The installer
still retrieved an updated kernel from the Internet, which I believe should
be left until after the installation completes.

I had no problems with the CD release version of Hardy Heron 8.10 Kubuntu-alt on the exact same hardware that I mentioned in my October posting. So I guess whatever caused the problem may be fixed now.

We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Whilst not able to test on the original hardware, I have installed 8.10 x64
on to a number of systems and not encountered this problem with new hardware
less than 12-months old. I also am a member of the Linux Format (
www.linuxformat.co.uk - user=ollie) and have answered similar queries from
new users being unable to continue installations. BIOS upgrades have always
enabled the x64 installs to proceed.

It is a strange, random bug that seems to be fixed if the BIOS is updated
from those installed on motherboards built around 18 - 24 months ago. It may
just be worth a small note in the installation "readme" that BIOS updates
can fix x64 installation hangs.
