Bug Description

[Impact]
Users with both the ubuntu-desktop and lubuntu-desktop metapackages installed are unable to upgrade to Saucy from Raring.

[Test Case]
1) install a Raring system with the ubuntu-desktop and the lubuntu-desktop metapackages
2) Try to upgrade to Saucy via do-release-upgrade
3) Observe an unresolvable problem message

If you try upgrading use the dist-upgrader in -proposed by using do-release-upgrade -p or update-manager -p, you should be able to upgrade to Saucy.

Multiple instances of this, probably more to come. Feel pretty safe about slapping all of them into the same category. Logs seem basically identical in each case.

This could benefit from a bugpattern, this issue is highly visible (occurs during the upgrade process), and the reports that have come in do not have any information not contained in this report.

@Quinn - the log files are not the same and while each bug report shows the same message "failed to calculate the upgrade" this can happen for lots of different reasons. Please do not mark any more bugs as a duplicate of this one.

Brian Murray (brian-murray) wrote : Please test proposed package

Hello kingcharles1666, or anyone else affected,

Accepted ubuntu-release-upgrader into saucy-proposed. The package will build now and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/1:0.205.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance!

When testing the release upgrader (not from proposed) I saw the following in my main.log:

2013-10-19 01:10:00,489 DEBUG Marking 'ubuntu-desktop' for upgrade
2013-10-19 01:10:00,576 WARNING Can't mark 'ubuntu-desktop' for upgrade (E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.)
2013-10-19 01:10:00,576 DEBUG Marking 'lubuntu-desktop' for upgrade
2013-10-19 01:10:00,659 WARNING Can't mark 'lubuntu-desktop' for upgrade (E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.)
2013-10-19 01:10:00,770 DEBUG About to apply the following changes

However, the upgrade was going to proceed. Testing the release upgrader from proposed I observed the following:

2013-10-19 01:11:14,147 DEBUG Marking 'ubuntu-desktop' for upgrade
2013-10-19 01:11:14,147 DEBUG Marking 'lubuntu-desktop' for upgrade
2013-10-19 01:11:14,271 DEBUG About to apply the following changes

So I think the verification of this is done.

I tried sudo update-manager -p and followed the GUI. It seems to work.
