Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-11-generic

I have a Realtek RTL8180L internal wifi card here (at least that's what lspci tells me). I have quite regular packet loss on the device (which don't occur on the wired interface). Say around 4-5 seconds of packet loss every minute. Rather strange phenomenon, i can't explain it without a kernel bug, so I thought important of notifying you guys.

This is the complete lspci:

02:02.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8180L 802.11b MAC (rev 20)

...which is rather odd because thinkwiki.org says this Thinkpad T40 shoudl have either an "IBM" (using the Atheros driver) Intel (ipw2100) or Cisco chipset (airo).

and dmesg:

uname:

Linux justine-laptop 2.6.17-11-generic #2 SMP Fri May 18 23:39:08 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

I tried the kernel from edgy-proposed (-50) and from gutsy (2.6.22, not booting at all :). Am capable of compiling a custom kernel and applying patches for debugging purposes.

Sorry for the delay. Here's the full dmesg.

Note that I now upgraded the laptop to 7.04 and the problem still occurs reliably.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

As far as I know, there are still issues with this driver, even on 8.04.
I will check for this exact symptom but there's at least one that
remains that I'm aware of: when anything bigger than a ACK is uploaded
on the wifi card, the machine freezes completely.

I will try to update this bug with the details.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

So this bug has been fixed... in a way, in the latest release (8.10
ibex). What's happening there is that the module has been simply removed
from the distribution, hereby implementing *complete* and systematic
packet loss on the interface. :P

I had to revert to an older installed kernel to keep the wifi running. I
haven't retested the issue with that older kernel however.
