Bug Description

Hi, I installed Win Vista and Ubuntu 12.04 on this dual-boot notebook.
The printer is HP OfficeJet 4620. I had printing problems with USB connection yet.
I've removed USB cable and made installation as wireless printer with HP software on Vista.
Installation on Vista is OK, i can print test page.
I've rebooted pc and installed printer on Ubuntu with the latest HPLIP drivers.
I've installed plugins also with hp-plugin. So, Ubuntu can find the printer, and i can see printer's home-page on firefox.
But I can't have any printed page. The system says that printing process is completed, but the printer doesn't respond.
Job queue says that process is interrupted. Right-click on "interrupted", click "restart" but printing doesn't start.

This is internal error founded: usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups.

Here is the report of hp-check and hp-doctor.

Checking for Configured Queues....

Queue(s) configured correctly using HPLIP.

Checking for HP Properitery Plugin's....
HP Properitery Plugin's are not required as no plug-in printer is present.

Diagnose completed...

I updated with 3.13.11.
I tried to delete existing printers and run hp-setup. The problem is exactly the same.

Can you help me, please?

Hello Stefano Mura,

Thanks for providing the logs. From the logs (error_log) I can see that hpcups filter crashed during printing. But unfortunately I am not able to reproduce this crash here on Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit OS using same HPLIP version. To analyze it further I need few more things.

1) Can you send me the source document used for printing.
2) Which application and version is used for printing. Is it acroread or something else?
3) Are you able to print using USB connection? For that you need to setup a new print queue using "hp-setup" command and select USB connection.
4) Is printing failing only for one document or for all documents. Can you send me the "hp-logcapture" output for printing on different document.
5) Is printing failing only for one application or for all applications. Can you send me the "hp-logcapture" output for printing on different application.

Thanks,

hello Sanjay, thank you for your help.

1-2) I send you source documents which also contains info on software versions.
I launch a print test from Mozilla, too. I send you an image with Firefox version.
I send you also images of job queue and print job attributes.
3)I can't print with usb. I installed an usb printer with hp-setup and during installation I launched test printing. Nothing. the system says that process is "completed" but in the job queue (i send you an image) it's interrupted. I made just this test with usb, I think it's enough.
4) i send you log-capture for every printing on every application.

I tried to print from bash with "lp -P filename" command (n.331), but the result is the same.
I'm not able to launch hp-logcapture for this process. I send you job attributes image.

Hello Mura,

Sorry for the delay. Unfortunately I am still not able to reproduce the issue here. I see that hpcups filter is always failing irrespective of the document/application, so I need further assistance from you to help me finding the root cause. Please try below steps.

1) Run hpcups filter manually and see if it crashes. below are the steps for running the same.
     a) Generate cups-raster using below command (in root mode)
         cupsfilter -m application/vnd.cups-raster -o "PageSize=A4" -p <PPD NAME> <DOCUMENT TO BE PRINTED> > /tmp/test.ras
e.g
         cupsfilter -m application/vnd.cups-raster -o "PageSize=A4" -p /etc/cups/ppd/Officejet_4620.ppd /tmp/testdoc.txt > /tmp/test.ras

      b) chmod 666 /tmp/test.ras

      c) #Set PPD environment variable
           export PPD=/etc/cups/ppd/<PPD NAME>
           export PPD=/etc/cups/ppd/Officejet_4620.ppd

      d) #Run hpcups filter manually and check if it crashes.
           /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups 1 TempUserName TempTitle 1 "" /tmp/test.ras

2) if check in the output (of step 1) if any crash is seen, if not then please try below things and let me know the result.
    a) Upgrade cups and cups-filters package and then try printing.
    b) Change language to english and then try printing.

Please send /tmp/test.ras file to me

Thanks,
Sanjay

Hello Mura,

I think I found the root cause. Can you try one more thing before trying above steps.

1) While installing HPLIP version 3.13.11 from hplip-3.13.11.run file, one more directory (hplip-3.13.11) whould have been created in the same location where hplip-3.13.11.run was run. (Otherwise please install HPLIP3.13.11 from the same run file again and generate hplip-3.13.11 directory)

2) Open prnt/hpcups/SystemServices.cpp file from hplip-3.13.11 directory and change "fname[64];" to "fname[256]={0};"

3) Now open terminal and change directory (cd) to hplip-3.13.11 directory

4) Now run below commands to install hpcups again.
     make
     sudo make install

5) Now try printing and let us know the result.

6) If this does not work then try steps mentioned before.

Thanks,

I tried steps you wrote in other mail, but cups crashed.

I send you test.ras and terminal text with which you can verify if I
made correctly every step.

                    gdb /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups <CORE DUMP FILENAME>

Hello. I'll retry every step.

Please sorry for this question, but
i'm not an expert: when you write

have I to write the real
user name or I have to write the string exactly as above?

Thank you.

Hello Mura,

Thanks a lot Mura for providing me the logs. It helped me a lot in finding out a root cause. Please update the buffer size in one more file (See step 2 below) and then compile and install hpcups filter again. All updated steps are mentioned below.

2)Update buffer size from 64 to 256 in below files.
  a) Open prnt/hpcups/SystemServices.cpp file from hplip-3.13.11 directory and change "fname[64];" to "fname[256]={0};"
  b) Open prnt/hpcups/HPCupsFilter.cpp file from hplip-3.13.11 directory and change
     "char hpPreProcessedRasterFile[64]" ==> Line number: 597
                  to
      "char hpPreProcessedRasterFile[256]={0,}"

and "char szFileName[64];" to char "szFileName[256];" ==>at line number 663

3) Now open terminal and change directory (cd) to hplip-3.13.11 directory

4) Now run below commands to install hpcups again.
     make
     sudo make install

5) Now try printing and let us know the result.

6) If printing still fails then please provide me the gdb log as mentioned in POST#11.

Hi!

You have resolved! The printer works!

Congratulations,
Sanjay! And thank you very much!

I send you the terminal report like
yesterday.

I have two questions, please:

1) a curiosity: is it
possible that after "sudo make install" command, the

SystemServices.cpp file had changed? I opened it and i found a
document with only 40 lines. I send it to you.

2) Can we update hplip
software without fear to thwart all this work?

Thanks a lot
again.

Stefano

Hello Mura,

I am glad to know that printing is now working for you. Please find answers to your questions below.

1) a curiosity: is it possible that after "sudo make install" command, the SystemServices.cpp file had changed? I opened it and i found a document with only 40 lines. I send it to you.
==>No, file (SystemServices.cpp) is not changed after sudo make install.

2) Can we update hplip software without fear to thwart all this work?
==> Yes, we will provide the fix in our next HPLIP release.

Thanks,
Sanjay
