Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

Ubuntu 6.10: I was using gnome-system-monitor in an environment installed on a normally mounted drive (/dev/sda1) and at that time it correctly displayed
disc reads and writes to the filesystem (I have used green color for read, and red color for write).

But since my move to a fake-raid system (raid 0: dmraid using two 400GB SATA-II drives on a promise fasttrack controller) only writes are now displayed.
The root filesystem is now mounted on /dev/mapper/pdc_cichcdiia.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Thank you for your bug. Could you try if that's still happening on 7.04?

Hello Sebastien,

thanks for contacting. I will do so when I'm back from holiday, which
is in a few weeks.

Regards,
Andreas

Hello, I have described the problem as good as I can, but sorry, I
don't have the time to install a complete distribution in order to
verify if the problem occurs in Feisty Fawn. It took me days to get
the Fake Raid to work with Edgy.

Bye,
Andreas

I can confirm this bug still exists on Ubuntu Jaunty, 9.04. Here are some filtered results from "mount":

~$: mount
/dev/sdc6 on /home type ext3 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro,acl)
/dev/mapper/isw_dihagdeiig_RAID03 on / type ext3 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro)
/dev/mapper/isw_dihagdeiig_RAID07 on /mnt/storage type ext3 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro,acl)
/dev/mapper/isw_dihagdeiig_RAID01 on /mnt/windows_vista type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,default_permission,blksize=4096)

----

Basically the gnome-system-monitor applet can monitor hard disk activity. It monitors /dev/hd#, /dev/sd# (IDE & SATA drives, USB Sticks, etc.) just fine. However, devices which exist in /dev/mapper (from the dmraid configuration) are not monitored for disk I/O activity, and they should be.

In my particular example, the only disk which shows disk I/O in the applet is activity against my /home drive. The root filesystem resides on /dev/mapper/isw_dihagdeiig_RAID03, and it never shows I/O.

If you require any additional information, I'd be more than pleased to provide.

Yes, I can confirm that the applet does not show activity for /dev/md RAID devices.

Thanks for your report, that's something to send directly upstream at http://bugzilla.gnome.org by someone experiencing the issue, for forwarding instructions please read http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME, Thanks in advance.

That's a joke, isn't it? I have submitted this bug 2 years ago, it's still not fixed because you were still looking for someone else to proove it - remember that you requested me to migrate from ubuntu 6 to ubuntu 7 just to check whether it's fixed? - and at the day someone else finally prooves that bug, you say "this bug ticket cannot be used anymore - go there and learn how to enter it somewhere else" ...

I wonder what you are using this bug tracking for ... maybe getting rid of annoying people telling you their problems?

Goodbye

Nobody said that the ticket can not be used but reality is that ubuntu only distribute this software and doesn't write it and nobody there seems to be interested to work on the issue or has a configuration exposing it so if you want to get work done on it it might be a good idea to send to the software writters rather than waiting

Gnome bugzilla has some duplicate bug reports on this issue. I believe the current bug for this issue in Gnome bugzilla is:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=160441

That bug includes a patch that may fix this issue.

Is it possible to get that patch into Ubuntu?

The bug still exists in Maverick. However, I was able to rebuild the libgtop2 with the above mentioned Bugzilla patch, which applies cleanly and fixes the bug for my software RAID.

For convenience, I have attached the patch here.
