Bug Description

lightdm now reads config files in /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d. One of the files in a standard Ubuntu installation is 50-unity-greeter.conf.

lightdm-gtk-greeter installs /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/40-lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf. Since 50-unity-greeter.conf is read after 40-lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf, you need to edit the config files somehow to make lightdm select lightdm-gtk-greeter. (Removing unity-greeter is not advisable, since that would force you to also remove ubuntu-desktop.)

It would make more sense if lightdm-gtk-greeter took precedence over the default unity-greeter. After all it's reasonable to assume that you want to use lightdm-gtk-greeter if you install it.
