Bug Description

In kubuntu gutsy tribe 3 for x86 on my Dell Inspiron 1150 w/Celeron processor I couldn't download any packages to install over my wireless internet, but I could get onto the Internet using Konqueror.
I had a similar issue in both Ubuntu and Kubuntu Edgy Eft (never tried it with Dapper) where I couldn't download packages for installation and I couldn't access the Internet using Firefox (but could with Konqueror). This was resolved in Feisty Fawn, however.

As requested, please find attached a copy of my /etc/resolv.conf from my
Kubuntu Gutsy Tribe 3 install

You've correct DNS nameservers on your router ?!

Try to use www.OpenDNS.com

Unfortunately, the broadband connection is shared with others, so I'm
forbidden from fiddling with the router (it was a nightmare getting it
set up originally)!

Although I'm not 100% sure, I'm inclined to think the problem is
probably to do with Gutsy. I'm currently dual-booting Kubuntu Feisty and
Gutsy on the same laptop, using the same Belkin wireless card
(F5D7010uk, v6, using the Ralink RT61 chipset) which I got running in
both installs using the exact same Windows drivers with ndiswrapper. My
Feisty install works absolutely fine, it's only the Gutsy one which has
this problem. However, as I mentioned, I had the exact same issue with
Edgy when using an Ethernet connection (wasn't able to get the wireless
connection working with this at all as we use WPA and I had no way of
installing Network Manager).
I have also briefly tried the AMD64 version of Kubuntu Gutsy on my other
laptop (a Philips X58), and that worked fine using the same router, but
that was by doing a network upgrade from Feisty.
Would using OpenDNS make a difference if it worked fine in Feisty using
the exact same router?

Afraid so. I downloaded it the day it was released, and it still has the
same issue.
Shame, because it's now got a driver for my wireless card which works
perfectly, so I won't need to use ndiswrapper anymore, and it's also
resolved an issue whereby trying to connect to a wireless network was
unreliable (but I wasn't going to complain about that because it was
still more reliable than when I ran Windows XP).

I've installed Kubuntu Gutsy Tribe 5, and I'm still experiencing the
same difficulty in downloading anything from the repositories. It
hangs at about 27-30% when I try to fetch updates in Adept.
I've just tried using OpenDNS to see if that makes any difference, and
I'm afraid it doesn't make it any better. Now, if I try fetching
updates in Adept, it doesn't want to get started at all.
I did try apt-get update, figuring that it might show an error message
there that might give some clue as to what's the matter. Here's what
it said:

matthew@matthew-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get update
[sudo] password for matthew:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11 Resource
temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the list directory
matthew@matthew-laptop:~$

I hope this helps.

Please attach here your /etc/apt/sources.list and do at terminal:

ps xua |grep update-manager to see if it's running. You have apt-get locked so that's why you can't use it.

Another interesting command is: df -h to see your disk space.

This bug isn't possible.. you still have only internet at konqueror ? Try to use x-chat or gaim..

I attach the results of the df -h and ps xua |grep update-manager, together
with a copy of the etc/apt/sources.list.

I've just tried Kontact and Kopete and both work fine.

I tried apt-get update several times. Some times it said it was connecting to
the server, but failed to download anything. Other times it came up with the
message I sent you earlier.

What I will do over this weekend is download the Ubuntu or Xubuntu
Tribe 5 and try them to see if Firefox works OK (As I mentioned, I
couldn't get it or any of the package management tools to work in
Edgy). I'll let you know how that goes.

I have absolutely no idea why, but Adept Updater has just this second
started working! It's appeared in my panel saying there are updates
waiting, and is busily downloading them as I write this!

I've tried Ubuntu Gutsy Tribe 3, and that did have the issue with
Firefox that I mentioned, as well as Synaptic being unable to download
anything. Firefox is completely unable to connect to any site I try.
So it does seem to be the same kind of issue as I experienced in Edgy.
I haven't had a repeat of Adept suddenly working like it did - it
seems to have been a one off. I've tried using both wireless
connection and an Ethernet cable to the router and both produce the
same results. It fails to connect and the connection eventually times
out.
Could it be to do with the ISP? I'm with Talk Talk Broadband and they
have a pretty bad reputation.

This problem isn't your ISP, but maybe a slowly internet connection. If it's fixed on Tribe-5 that's the important. Thanks for your bug report.
