It looks like this was an upgrade of a previous install and there were some issue with some packages on the originally installed system.

I have the same problem with a little different install setup. I tried to fresh install Ubuntu 14.04 on my laptop which has UEFI and winows 8. Before I tried todo fresh install, I successfully upgraded my existing Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04 withouta problem. I wanted to do fresh install again because my sound settings and other stuff seem to be too complex and have some non-standard options from my own tweaks.

This release of Ubuntu is no longer receiving maintenance updates. If this is still an issue on a maintained version of Ubuntu please let us know.
