Bug Description

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

With recent updates to X it appears it may have broken the "legacy fullscreen option" under compiz. I'm using nvidia 7600gs with nvidia-glx drivers running steam via wine. Checkboxing "legacy fullscreen support" use to make the app full screen with out the gnome menu bar present. Since recent updates gnome menu bar stays present even though option is selected.

Users can recreate via installing wine and fullscreen app. Enable desktop effects and open the wine app. Gnome menu bar overlays on top of application. If user installs compizconfig-settings-manager and check boxes "full screen legacy support" under work arounds the gnome menu bar is still present. Even though this workaround used to work before recent updates to Xorg.

--
A possible workaround (for karmic, at least) is to go to the Compiz Settings, enter the "Workarounds" section, and enable "legacy fullscreen support".

That used to be the case but not anymore since the updates.

I have an Intel 915 graphic card and it isn't possible to play a 3D game in Wine with enabled compiz. The panels always stay on top and the desktop goes black but you see nothing.

Still a problem for me using Intrepid also. Does anyone have more information about this bug? All I found was this at the compiz forums: http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=7029

I'd like to know exactly what the problem is and whether anybody has a "plan" yet to solve the issue...if not I might investigate and see if I can fix it myself because it's *really* annoying me now.

Seems like the situation with Jaunty is better. If application is opened fullscreen with same resolution as desktop panel is hidden, but if resolution differs panel still is visible.

I only got this issue after upgrading from Intrepid to Jaunty. My problem is that I have to emulate a virtual desktop because I'm using twinview (with nvidia). When I am not emulating a virtual desktop, I don't have this problem. In Intrepid the wine program was correctly put on top, but in Jaunty the gnome panel came on top.

Confirmed on two computers with Jaunty, using the nvidia 180 driver. Didn't see this behavior on the first computer in Intrepid, only after a new install of Jaunty. Occurs when using Cedega OR wine.

I hit bug #369158 with gqview as well, which has been duped here. I'm using Jaunty on nvidia here. Could reproduce it with the latest gqview CVS trunk as well. By the way, I guess the gqview fullscreen mode should be much simpler to reproduce this issue and investigate the problem than a full wine setup.

There seems to be a race condition: while the first time I switched to fullscreen usually got me gnome panels around my window, the second time it usually was really full screen, and if not, then the third time it was. So switching to fullscreen mode and back a few times seems to be a workaround at least for gqview.

Yes, sometimes it helps to close the fullscreen window and reopen it. But this is not reliable, sometimes I needed do this 10 times or more to have a real fullscreen without panels.

Does it help if you disable Unredirect Fullscreen Window? You can change this option in System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager in the General Options. You'll have to install the compizconfig-settings-manager package first.

Also, if at all possible, please try to reproduce this problem in karmic.

Legacy fullscreen is the default, karmic users don't need to enable it. As far as I'm aware the only people seeing this bug at this point should be some ati users. I know it works with intel and nvidia, at least.

I'm not sure if this will be helpful, but... There's another problem with Wine and a memory access violation and a workaround for this problem is to disable ptrace protection with

    echo 0 | sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope

I noticed that running this command fixes the menu bar problem as well. I'm running Precise.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. The compiz program that we currently use in Ubuntu is a C++ re-write of the original compiz and was announced the 4th July 2010. Therefore, the bugs that were reported before that date, will be marked as "Won't Fix" as they probably exist in the original program which is not stored in launchpad. (The last LTS that used the old compiz is the 10.04 which is not supported anymore).
