Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

When running compiz there is no window snapping while you resize a window. Window snapping only occurs when you move a window. When not running compiz you can easily resize windows so the windows butt up against one another. This feature is lost when using compiz, although window snapping while moving a window remains.

Confirmed. I don't recall what the default settings were, but I know I had to work around this by installing compizconfig-settings-manager and editing the configuration for the Snapping Windows plugin.

Confirmed. This is a pretty annoying "feature". If you have "Resize Window" enabled in any mode, you can resize the window but it won't snap to any other app windows. This feature also allows you to resize a window so that the top or bottom are under the top or bottom task bar. It should at least offer resistance - but I would prefer to see it behave as the default window manager does - it stops completely at the task bars and doesn't the window's limits exceed the border of the task bar.

Confirmed, intrepid. It's really too bad that switching to compiz still means you have to trade in some functionality.

Going on two years and this just got triaged...wtg!

Who is working on it? Is it upstream? Can we get a link to the upstream bug? Will it be fixed for Karmic? Will it be backported to Jaunty?

Concern: I am concerned that the snapping will not work properly with gnome-panel. Will it snap to the panel, the screen edge, both? If both, how will it work with a small panel size, such as 10px? I just don't want it to be fudged like when moving a window and having it freak out/get stuck on the screen edge when the user wants it to snap to the panel.

Hey! Snapping seems to work in compiz on Karmic beta 1.

Unfortunately resizing isn't as smooth as in metacity but it has just gotten amazingly more useful! :D

Darn it, sorry. Been testing the beta1 and I got all excited because snapping worked. But I didn't realize the second session was really metacity and not compiz.

Sorry again.

This has been reported upstream at http://bugs.opencompositing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1140. Maybe we should make some noise there. :-)

This is a serious usability problem. How has it not been fixed!?

Amazing. How is it possible that with snapping for moving windows, still no one has bothered to implement snapping for resizing? Have no developers ran into the use case of resizing windows? Don't they notice this glaring usability problem? Or does it simply not bother them?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. The compiz program that we currently use in Ubuntu is a C++ re-write of the original compiz and was announced the 4th July 2010. Therefore, the bugs that were reported before that date, will be marked as "Won't Fix" as they probably exist in the original program which is not stored in launchpad. (The last LTS that used the old compiz is the 10.04 which is not supported anymore).
