Lubuntu alternate iso files are oversized for CD disks

Bug Description

Package: lubuntu-desktop or lubuntu-meta. Whatever represents the selection of installed program packages.

Issue: Even the alternate iso files are oversized. It will not be possible to install from any Lubuntu 16.04 LTS iso file via a standard 700 MB CD disk (the limit is actually 703.125 Mibibytes). It is particularly important to keep the i386 (32-bit) image small, because it is used in *old computers* with 32-bit hardware, and some of these computers are difficult to boot from other boot media than CD disks.

Workarounds:

1. Boot from DVD or USB where it works.

2. Boot (chainload) via Plop to Lubuntu on USB where it works.

3. Boot Ubuntu Server or Ubuntu mini.iso (within CD size) and install the package 'lubuntu-desktop', if CD is the only alternative.

I personally will overlook this bug, as fitting the operating system in 700MB would be complex for little benefit.

I would discuss this with the Lubuntu mailing list. After doing so, if you decide it would be good to implement, please set this bug status back to "confirmed" and unassign you from it.

@ Alberto,

The problem is not the cost of DVD disks, but the fact that really old PCs have CD-only optical drives. Some slightly newer PCs can only write CDs (but can read DVDs).

It is a good idea to discuss this with the Lubuntu mailing list. It has been done before, but time passes by, and somewhere we have to leave the really old computers to Puppy Linux, Tiny Core and similar ultra-light linux distros.

Note that the minimum system requirements for Lubuntu 16.04 is a Intel Pentium 4 with 512 MB of RAM. Nearly all computers with that will have a DVD drive.

@Alberto, as the release manager for Lubuntu, I can tell you this is a legitimate concern. Since Lubuntu is specifically targeted at old machines, we often have to worry about such things. I can tell you from experience that your assertion that a computer meeting the system requirements will have a DVD drive is not correct.

It looks like we are down to the following sizes in the daily image:

amd64 - 696 MB
i386 - 694 MB
powerpc - 719 MB

So as of right now, this bug doesn't affect amd64 and i386, but still affects powerpc in the daily image. This isn't that urgent because we don't release another powerpc image until 18.04.

However, the Xenial daily image has the following sizes:

amd64 - 740 MB
i386 - 737 MB
powerpc - 788 MB

This should be cut down as soon as possible.

And as an additional factor, here are the Trusty sizes:
amd64+mac - 727 MB
amd64 - 661 MB
i386 - 643 MB
powerpc - 665 MB

The only oversized image is the mac image.

everyone with this problem can use the Ubuntu Customization Kit 14.04

Doenload LUbuntu 16.04 live image

install ubuntu, use the command bellow :

sudo apt-get install syslinux-utils libfribidi-bin uck

open Ubuntu Customization Kit pick (uk) in the setup

choose the lubuntu image,

yes yes yes yes......

then pick the 1st option,

sudo apt-get remove firefox
sudo apt-get autoremove
y
exit

now pick the 2ed option,

job done, you will now have a lubuntu image bellow 700mb, however firefox will be missing, and for some reason it says the image is 14.04 or something, which its not, because i used a 16.04 image ?

anyway it works!!!

As Ubuntu has grown and aged, and has computers have done the same, I don't think this is a valid bug any more.
