Bug Description

Nothing like this ever happened in feisty. I got freshly installed gutsy.
After 20 min or so strange things happen on desktop:
1. icons look distorted like there is sth wrong with graphic
2. icons change shape and look like empty file no matter what kind of file it is (avi png mp3 txt zip)
3. can't access folder and getting massage content of folder could not be accessed
4. everything disappear and there is totally nothing on desktop
after one of those things happen only alt+ctrl+backspace remain I cannot work with not accessible desktop
PS. and what happened to "hide all windows button" when i click it instead of getting everything hidden it all comes UP ? 2nd click take it all down.

Thanks for taking time to look at it:

... I must say that after few updates some of it doesn't show up as often as it did before but i still get "2nd & 3rd" quite often, 3rd with info: "The folder contents could not be displayed. Sorry, couldn't display all the contents of "folder name" " and all my files and folders on desktop are not accessible and files turn into empty files, clicking on them do nothing. It usually happens after going through lots of files (browsing mp3 etc) I'd say about 100-200.
After that only ctrl+alt+backspace save me coz regular shut down doesn't work.
Thank You. I love ubuntu!

I had exactly the same thing happen to me yesterday. I had 2 file browser windows open to compile an mp3 cd. From one window I was quickly opening mp3 files to have a quick listen with totem movie player and if I liked the file, I dragged it into another folder in the second browser. After 20 files, the exact symptoms described in this bug report appeared.
I then checked my system monitor and found nautilus was using 50% of system resources. CTRL-ALT_DEL and a new login brought back the desktop, but not always. At other times (I had the problems at least a dozen times) after supplying my login and password I just got a brown screen and nothing happened (I could still switch to terminal with CTRL-ALT-F1). At other times, the desktop came back but no wallpaper and no icons on the Desktop.
By the way, the MP3 file were on a mounted NTFS partition.

For the rest I really had the same symptoms as posted above.

Please tell me what more info you need.

Doesn't seem to be an xorg issue, but nautilus.

Well, it has not happened ever since, but then again I have not had a quick mp3 browsing session again since that time.

I will try with hardy alpha 3 one of these days.

I've found solution to this problem on the web. I would've never thought that it's gonna be that simple.
Here is a link originally posted by vanadium:

now I can do what I need to without having crashes every 20 minutes.

Is this a "bug" ? Might be it crashes everything if you don't change settings.
It wasn't happening in feisty fawn 7.04 so why it does in gutsy gibbon 7.10 ?
