ibook G4 doesn't boot because of framebuffer

So I found out the problem was usplash, which is installed with /etc/usplash.conf that lacks any resolution setting - once I put there 1024x768 setting, it works perfectly, and even got me back control over lcd brightness which was lost since gutsy.
I do believe it is a serious problem that the file is installed incorrectly configured, and that usplash reacts so badly in that situation (even though according to changelog this was supposed to be taken care of).

The usplash problem is caused by bug 150930 which is fixed in Hardy.

I would like to test that but the cd will only boot with the very new kernel release 7-11, from yesterday. Is there a way to make sure this version is already on the livecd before i download and burn it?

Logically, it has to be linux-image-2.6.24-5-powerpc since it's a daily build, but I can't confirm it since in my case, I can't even boot the CD in my iMac.

according to which I think it's indeed 2.6.24-5-powerpc
the thing is I need 2.6.24-7 to boot on this machine (it's the IDE problem that got fixed just now) - maybe you have the same problem on your machine.
Right now I run hardy successfully, but it's upgraded from gutsy - so i have to reinstall from scratch to see if this bug is fixed correctly. I'll wait another day and keep checking that list file...

I can confirm this bug with a iMac. The behavior of the computer is different but it is unable to boot with usplash because it freezes just before the moment where usplash should appears, and boot correctly with nosplash.

The usplash package has been superseded by plymouth and has been removed from the Ubuntu archive. Closing all related bugs.
