Bug Description

In Kubuntu 7.10 x86 it is possible to install Xfce and then log in with an Xfce session.

There, in Xfce, if one right-clicks the mouse over the desktop, a pulldown menu appears in which System is a submenu and the item Adept Manager appears.

If Adept Manager is run then, the following error appears:

/home/{user}/.kde/share/config/adept_manager not writeable please contact your system administrator

A work-around is to run adept_manager from the shell using sudo.

Technically, this is also a security vulnerability because it interferes with updates and package management.

In the KDE menu, a box is checked on Adept's entry for "run as different user". This is so that it prompts you for your sudo password. So running adept using sudo isn't "a workaround", it's the normal way of things. Is there a setting for this in the xfce menu editor? If not, you should be able to change the command that executes to "sudo adept-manage" and have it work properly.
I'm not sure if this is an adept bug or an xfce one.

Assigning to xubuntu as they'll know best as to which part of the desktop the bug belongs.

I'm closing the Xubuntu-meta task, adept is not a default application of Xubuntu. You will be able to edit launchers with the next release of Xfce, but this is only a workaround. You might want to report this as affecting adept.

Editing the launchers is helpful, but does not address the original request.

I know several work-arounds, and yes Adept is not the default for Xcfe. However, it should work even for beginners if they should choose to (or happen to) install it.

For example, in teaching it is very useful to be able to explain package managers by having students switch back and forth between two. The effect is lost, especially on beginners, if the is a 30minute session before hand to make the arrangements necessary to run second package manager.

Or for example, when writing guides for site-wide deployment, it would be useful to be able to choose the non-default tools so as to be able to harmonize between desktops. Staff and students may not have exactly the same preference (or system requirements) for desktop environments, but if the same applications are available, then one set of guides can be published for the whole group.

We've discussed this between members of the Xubuntu team, we won't (and probably can't) fix it by modifying Xubuntu. Not before the Xfce 4.6 release which will include more possibilities for the menu settings.
Setting the package target to adept to have an opinion from members of the Kubuntu team.

Lars, you can provide a patch of course.

Shouldn't be an issue with Adept 3.0. It's .desktop executes kdesudo to invoke adept.

No, a major release such as Adept 3.0 does not qualify for an SRU.
