I installed the recent version ubuntu-7.10 on a Great Quality Desktop powered by 1Giga Pro CPU with Power Management support including wak on LAN and Wake on Alarm. I was able to shut the machine down with the command when I had the very early version of Ubuntu. Now it just hangs when the command is given.

The Hardy Heron Alpha series was recently released which contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks

I've experienced this problem on Hardy Heron on a P3 500MHz. Some functions shut down, but not the video card or power supply. Soft power button fails to respond. Reset works. Turning off the power supply or unplugging the machine are the only ways to kill the power.

Hi Adrian,

Its sounds like you may be experiencing a slightly different bug and should likely open a new report. We can easily duplicate bugs later on if necessary. In that new report can you include the debugging information outlined here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Also, I'm just curious if there might be any BIOS updates for you machine which may help resolve the issue. In the meantime I'm going to close this report since we have heard no feedback from the original bug reporter. Thanks.
