kubuntu double screen setup still fails

Bug Description

It never worked for me. ever.

System Settings | Monitor and Display | Administrator Mode (see attached screen-shots)
nothing can be set and no affect after apply.

I change modes with 'xrandr -s ...'. When in single screen size, video playback does not work, only in full resolution.

This is because Guidance still uses Xinerama and it is almost completely deprecated. As you found, xrandr is the currently supported approach. In KDE4 for Intrepid, we have a different tool that uses xrandr that replaces Guidance. Making Guidance use xrandr would require a significant redesign that simple isn't going to get done.
