Bug Description

For 18.04, Ubuntu introduced a new option for a "minimal install" in ubiquity. We did not have our seeds set up correctly for this and so it doesn't function correctly. However, this was overlooked until after release and we have long offered a minimal installation option:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/MinimalInstall
so we left well enough alone. (Note: Xubuntu didn't offer it intentionally and they offer a similar minimal option)

For 18.10 and beyond, we switched to the Calamares installer that doesn't offer this option either. There's some potential of adding this as a feature, which we'll be looking into. This is being tracked here:
https://phab.lubuntu.me/T58

@cruzer001,

I suggest that you add more details to the bug decription, as how you tried to install the minimal installation (and that this bug is independent of the package lubuntu-core).

For me this bug is also affecting standard Lubuntu in 18.04 LTS (not only Lubuntu Next).

I downloaded the lubuntu live iso installer today and installed to virtualbox. I checked the box to install a minimal system and completed the install. I also did a complete (full) install with the same iso, checking the appropriate box. Both installs have the same packages and package count(1374 installed packages).

If you think I need to reinstall to verify, I can do that.

Lubuntu.me is the official website. Please download from there and verify the checksums, then reinstall and try again.

Wow, I never would I have suspected that. Both sites look official.

I will download and post back, but I suspect the problem is now solved.

I wonder how many others will (have) make the same mistake.

Thanks

Are you saying that you downloaded the mini.iso?

No, I downloaded the live (not the alternate or mini) iso from lubuntu.net on my original install.

In a few minutes I will have a minimal install loaded from lubuntu.me.

I have downloaded lubuntu 18.04; 64bit from lubuntu.me and checked the minimal install box during the install process. And again I have ended up with full desktop install.

What am I doing wrong?

Ok, I can confirm this. As of 18.04, there's a new "minimal install" option which is really something that Ubuntu desktop was marketing. I'm not sure it really works all that well for flavours. We have had a minimal install option that we have supported for a long time, though:

Actually looking at this a bit farther, it looks like there is a remove feature to the seeds that should have allowed for a minimal install for us. It's just not working.

For us, we've always had a "minimal" install, i.e. the lubuntu-core task, so we'll need to rename that. Minimal as the Desktop Team envisioned it is essentially the normal desktop and system tools, plus a browser. lubuntu-core doesn't even include things that we consider to be a normal part of LXDE (e.g. lxtask). So those need to be separate.

Additionally, we need some corrections to the seed to keep consistent with the vision of the Desktop Team. There's some additional apps we should remove, as well as language packs and reverse dependencies. I'm kind of against removing system tools. We'll have to think about that. Package management is a thing since we have both synaptic and gnome-software. That's probably an oversight we should fix.

Finally, we need to be sure that we are testing these things so that it doesn't happen again.

This can be a convenient option, easy for beginners to find.

One option would be to make it 'create lubuntu-core' (if that is possible).

FWIW, official support of Lubuntu's Bionic is ending this month, so the likelihood of seeing a fix there is quite small. Since then, we have a new installer, which means we'd have to implement our own mechanism. We'll look into that:

https://phab.lubuntu.me/T58

That said, the minimal installation option is still the best:
