Bug Description

A fresh installation of the Focal daily image dated 20220831 fails to start the graphical environment when using the nouveau drivers and I'm only able to log in on the console. The system under test is using QEMU w/ GPU passthrough and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 device.

The same issue happened with the 20.04.4 installation media however in that case I tried to install the NVIDIA drivers but installing the drivers did not work.

Does doing a ZFS install really matter to reproduce this one? I see it's reported under the

  Install (entire disk with ZFS)

test case in the ISO tracker, and I see

  root=ZFS=rpool/ROOT/ubuntu_a6ic10

in the cmdline, but there's no other mention of ZFS in the bug description.

No, doing a ZFS install is not necessary to reproduce this bug.

Well trying it with Ubuntu 22.04.2 today (serial 22030217.1) it seems like it is specific to installing with ZFS!

Brian Murray (brian-murray) wrote :

I am to recreate this by using a combination of LVM + Encryption or ZFS + encryption with an image with serial 22030217.1.

Well actually I'm fairly certain that the password prompt to unlock the root partition isn't being displayed at all as when I blindly entered the password I received a login screen.

There are in fact two problems this one where the desktop environment fails to start and another where the password prompt is not shown in plymouth as testing this again without the NVidia drivers I failed to get a desktop environment.
