Bug Description

I could access shares on my Windows-based network without any issues on Friday (2008-03-28). After installing updates released since then on Monday morning (2008-03-31), I can no longer access any network shares. I can browse to domains/workgroups and servers- but no shares are shown in Nautilus and if I repeatedly try to access them- my network account gets locked-out (as if I were submitting an invalid password). My password was previously saved, and I am not being prompted to enter/re-enter it.

Not sure if this is a samba-client issue or a problem with Gnome or Nautilus.

Ubuntu hardy (development branch) Release: 8.04

For what it is worth- I'm having the same problem on three different machines.

If I try to attach directly (instead of just browsing) using the "Connect to Server" option in Places, I get an error:

Can't display location "smb://windowsserver/"
No application is registered as handling this file.

I'm assuming an SMB app. got dropped or misconfigured in a recent update.

Found this bug, which mine is pretty much a dupe of. I just had the package responsible wrong:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/207072

The problem seems to be the change to gvfs. Unfortunately- except for the patch given in the bug above- no news on an "official" fix. This has made Ubuntu almost unusable to me in a corporate environment.

I´m not sure about Bug #207072 because they are using ActiveDirectory (ADS). I am not using ADS but have the same problem.

A workaround for your problem : instead of browsing "smb://servername" you can enter direct access to a share by "smb://servername/sharename".
