Bug Description

Archivemount uses the FUSE filesystem to mount archive files supported by libarchive (tar, tgz, zip...). It can be obtained at http://www.cybernoia.de/software/archivemount/ with instructions on how to build it at http://www.linux.com/feature/132196 (were I learn about it).

Since FUSE and libarchive are already a part of the Ubuntu repositories, I would like to request to add archivemount.

This would be nice. I had been making squashfs filesystems to mount in a similar way (and then using UnionFS to put a copy-on-write layer over it), but squashfs support isn't so widespread as tar support is, so I'd like to routinely do this with tar files instead.

The linux.com link above is now 404, but (at least today) is available from the Google cache via:

The "Archive Mounter" tool can do similar things, using gvfsd-archive and the ~/.gvfs directory

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/archivemount was packaged in Debian (see the attached bug watch) and have been available in Ubuntu for a while now.
