Bug Description

Binary package hint: kmix

Kubuntu Desktop i386 (20080417.1) (pre-RC) live session:

When I went to System Settings -> Sound System, and tried "Test Sound" button, it does play sound. (ok)
I hit the volume icon in tray, I choose "mixer" option, the KMix window does open. (ok)
The first column slider is Master Volume, works as expected (ok)
At the bottom there's horizontal Left/Right balance slider with "HDA Intel" label next to it, this one does NOT change the left/right balance, and also it brings the master volume slider down fast (and the real volume of sound gets down too). (bug)

Testing the same thing in installed Kubuntu 7.10:
everything works as expected, the L/R slider moves the balance left/right, the overall volume is not changed.
(although I don't see the master volume slider at all in 7.10's KMix)

On different PC with SiS Sl7012 (on-board AC97 kind of thing?) everything works ok, so it may be related to HDA Intel on-board audio only.

I'm getting the exact same behavior on my computer.

    cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
tells me the onboard sound card is Realtek ALC888

Kubuntu 8.04, motherboard intel g33fb, snd-hda-intel sound module.

I did seen already HDA Intel notebook which did work correctly, so it looks like just some specific board/driver is affected, not all of them.
If anyone will give me instructions how to collect relevant data, I will add it here.

Confirming this on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with the HDA Intel driver.

Kubuntu 8.10 live CD session update:
- the System settings does not have anymore any sound test, unless I'm blind? Just some "Sound" settings to list devices.
- used Amarok to play some default sample which is included
- the simple volume in tray works ok, changing volume up and down.
- when I hit "mixer" button, I do get the mixer settings with two (!!) "front" sliders, both of them affecting the volume together (!).
So if I set the one of them to 0%, the sound is off, it looks like they multiply each other.
- there's no left/right slider anymore anywhere.
