Bug Description

Binary package hint: devscripts

It would be nice if I could set dch to default to "unstable" instead of "precise" for distribution. Obviously, this is just an example. Currently dch always sets distribution to whatever release it is run on.

Patch attached. This adds DEBCHANGE_UPSTREAM, DEBCHANGE_DISTRIBUTION and DEBCHANGE_DISTRIBUTOR options to the config file.

I've also fixed the regression test for version increments to ignore config files as this fails if the build user has config files that change the default.

Thank you for the patch, Robie.

Sponsors, is this suitable for inclusion in Karmic?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software by following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/Debian. If you have done so, please tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

Fix Committed is incorrect. Setting status to New.

DEBCHANGE_UPSTREAM relates to the -U option, which is entirely created by Ubuntu, therefore it's not correct that this issue is fully an upstream one. On the other hand, it would be significantly preferable for the rest of the changes to be sent upstream to Debian and merged back into Ubuntu - the Ubuntu delta for debchange is nontrivial already.

Any updates on this bug? Is this bug still relevant? Have you opened an upstream bug in Debian? Thank you for telling us!

Thomas, thank you for jumping in.

Have you even spent 30 seconds to try and answer these questions yourself? It's quite rude not to do so.

Nothing has changed over all these years, the ball is still in the sponsors' field to review the patch (which I'm afraid has probably bitrotted already).

Sorry for letting the patch bitrotten. We now have a --vendor parameter that you can set to Debian or Ubuntu. In addition, you can set DEBCHANGE_VENDOR to permanently change the vendor.

What's missing to close this bug is to add DEBCHANGE_DISTRIBUTION. Are you willing to refresh the patch? Besides the refresh, this new environment variable needs to be documented in the man page. It would be nice to have test cases for the new option. What should happen, when you set DEBCHANGE_DISTRIBUTION to an Ubuntu series, but prepares an entry for Debian (or vice versa)?

Sorry Rolf for my mistake. Thank you for explaining me the status of this bug and the explanations that makes it for me and for the others clearer.

As the patch isn't applicable any more without further work, I'm unsubscribing sponsors. If/once this gets updated, please send it to Debian and re-subscribe ubuntu-sponsors. Thank you!
