Bug Description

my Ubuntu 8.04 (86_64 version) is set up to use dual monitors (19" LCD, and a 40" Sony TV) using two separate X Screens (no xinerama).

There is a 2 second delay before any menu appears on the LCD screen (Applications/Places/System) or even a File/Menu/View inside Firefox. Maximising windows is also subject to approximately a 2 second delay. I am not using compiz, the problem is not present when using nv or vesa driver.

The menus on the TV X Screen have no such problem, only the Monitor. I've tried physically changing the wires on the graphics cards, renumbering the screens, location, etc. the main screen always has a lag when drawing menus.

I had the nvidia 169.12 drivers, before going through the pain of upgrading to 173.14.09

I found this thread on the problem: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=114239 so I know I am not the only one. Also, i do not think it is a compiz issue.

If I disable the TV, then the problem dissapears.

Thanks for any help. I attach the xorg.conf file.

One last thing, despite the config file speicifying 60Hz for both monitors, according to nvidia-settings the TV is running at 50Hz, while LCD monitor at 60.02Hz. Not sure if this is related.

using Compiz is still resource intensive (especially with the NVIDIA driver). What happens if you disable Compiz and restart the Xserver?

apologise for the late reply. Actually switching to metacity seems to solve the problem. the menu's become very responsive as one would expect. Although still suprised that Compiz has such a detrimental effect...even on a quad core intel 2.6Ghz with 8GB of ram? evidently so...
thank you very much for you post.
