This bug was fixed in the package libprelude - 0.9.18.1-1ubuntu2

libprelude (0.9.18.1-1ubuntu2) jaunty; urgency=low

  * Apply upstream fix (https://trac.prelude-ids.org/changeset/11086)
    to fix linking issues with libtool 2.x (LP: #270807).

Indeed, the fix seems to work. I tested it in a virtual machine running a clean installation of ubuntu server 8.10 and installation went without it segfaulting.
