Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Installing the alpha 6 of ubuntu 8.10 for i386.

When the installer reaches the partitioner (step 4) the window can't be fully displayed because of the many partitions I have.
The window is too wide and does not fit the screen.

Step 5,6,7:
The window is still too wide and still does not fit the screen.

I filed this bug previously under bug #38442, but Colin Watson asked me to file it anew.
>>>bert07, could you file a new bug report about this, please? I know it's a recurrence of basically the same thing, but this bug has got very long and has many duplicates, and it would be easier to have a fresh start that talks only about this new problem.

Thanks for the data. Has this occured in previous versions where you have that many partitions? I take it that you do actually have that many? Is it possible to resize the window? Status->new

No, I did not happen in Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS, but you are using a new screen for step 4 (partitioning), and this was the first alpha of 8.10 I tried (got a mail that more testers were needed).

I do actually have 15 partitions on hda, and 13 partitions on hdb.

I can not say at the moment that the window can be resizes, I need to start the cd again, and I already shut that computer down for today. I'll let you know tomorrow. I need some sleep as well (02.40 AM here).

As far as I can see: the window can be resized, but only larger. Not to fit the screen.

Matthew: it won't have appeared in previous versions because the partition bar is a new feature.

Nothing has changed: still the same too large windows.

Nothing changed: still the same too large screens.
I also tried installing a daily yesterday on my laptop (dell inspiron 2200 - 13 partitions) and also for that the screens were too large.

No resizing possible.

Trying to install the daily build of Xubuntu from October 11th for i386.

The window still does not fit the screen.

Something else DID change.
When I entered the partitioner (step 4) I chose "manual". The partitioner started scanning the disks and than died.

I tries this installing directly without booting to the live cd and after booting into the live cd.

Hung in both cases.

Conclusion: Ubuntu (Xubuntu) can not be installed at this time.

I've seen that there is a new daily build of Ubuntu (Oct 12d). I did'nt try that one. Maybe the problem is solved already.

This bug was fixed in the package ubiquity - 1.10.7

---------------
ubiquity (1.10.7) intrepid; urgency=low

  [ Jonathan Riddell ]
  * Use Oxygen style in KDE UI

  [ Andreas Wenning ]
  * Edit ubiquity/frontend/kde_ui.py to correctly open the url for
    release notes.

  [ Evan Dandrea ]
  * Pack the table containing the partition bars in a scrolled window
    (LP: #272318).
  * Remove broken CD-ROM entries from fstab after install (LP: #150872).
  * Automatic update of included source packages: apt-setup
    1:0.37ubuntu6, base-installer 1.86ubuntu7, kboot-installer
    0.0.1ubuntu7, user-setup 1.20ubuntu10.

  [ Mario Limonciello ]
  * Add above broken CD-ROM entries to mythbuntu frontend too.
  * Properly pre-setup database on mythbuntu frontend. (LP: #276904)
  * Simplify the xorg.conf that is written out in apply-drivers. (LP: #181564)
The ideal situation is to enable these via Jockey, but Jockey doesn't
have a good interface for turning on during installation and turning
    on and off tv-out.

  [ Colin Watson ]
  * Fix excessive file-copy blacklisting, which had several problems
    (LP: #285238):
    - wasn't deciding which language packs to use before generating the
      blacklist;
    - was filtering out packages with prerms before doing ok-to-remove
      calculations;
    - needed to try recursively removing broken packages in order to get a
      fully-expanded list of reverse-dependencies out of apt;
    - was removing packages from the difference list too early so they
stopped being considered as packages that were allowed to be removed.
In an attempt to make this rather large change a little more reviewable,
note that the code used to analyse removals while generating the
blacklist is now the same as that used to remove unused packages later
    in the installation process.

There has not been so much change for the partition screen in the installer.
None, really. I would have thought that someone would have worked on it, so that the partition bar could fit the screen without a slider.

Or perhaps the partition screen as it is now, might not really be such a good idea?

Next alpha (4), I'll upload some screens from my machine.

Trying to install Ubuntu 9.04 Alpah 4 on my laptop, I have to (try) install in safe mode (otherwise I get just console). And I get 800x600. The Partitioner and subsequent screens are too big, and essential buttons are not visible.

This blocks installation. Guessing the number of buttons and getting them wrong is a major hassle (and even triggers another bug where accidentally hitting "Quit the installation" just locks up the confirmation dialog, Cancel does not work.)

Again the partition screen (and those that follow) does not fit the screen.
The slider also isn't there.
For screens, see the first screens I uploaded for this bug.

I have same problems.

Direct installing from UBUNTU 9.04 CD is impossible, because in step 4 - the partition window do not fit in 1024x768 screen and buttons are not visible.

I had to run Live CD and from there run installing process - the window was continually too wide, but it was possible to move the window (Alt+mouse drag) to get rest of window visible. But by try to maximalise this window, it get "crazy".

Sorry please my English :-/
