Bug Description

I have tried the LiveCD for both Kubuntu and Ubuntu. Upon selecting the run without installing option, the installer goes through all steps, and properly displays, until some point. That point seems to be around where kdm, or gdm, is started. The screen blanks, a flashing cursor appears in the upper left - briefly. Then the screen goes completely blank, the CD drive settles and stops. No keys or key combinations produce any response. The power button, when pressed for several seconds does turn the machine off.

I have burned several CDs of both Kubuntu and Ubuntu. I have at times selected F4 - safe video mode, and F6 acpi=off, noapic, removed quiet, and removed splash. Aside from the specific expected display responses early in the boot process, all result in the same condition.

Since the boot process never completes, there are logs that I can retrieve.

I have not tried to install to my hard drive, as I have no extra drive and I do have a very stable and useful Kubuntu 8.04 currently on my hard drive.

I have attached the only other thing I can think of, and that is a text file containing the output of "lshw" to show my hardware platform. My guess is that Alpha 6 does not recognize my laptop's Savage video.

can you try pushing the ctrl-alt-F1 combination and tell me if anything happens?

ctrl-alt-F1 produces no response. In fact, none of the ctrl-alt-<key>
combinations produce any response. Thank you for your inquiry!!

I have downloaded and run Intrepid Beta. Same result, the LiveCD does not function. At best I get a flashing cursor and the machine goes quiet. I also tried the installer on the Beta version, with the same result - flashing cursor, quiet machine.

Have you included the Savage video driver? Have you included anything that will work with the Savage/IX-MV video system for an IBM T20? I see no evidence of anything that will work with this video chip.

I have included the output from lshw as an attachment.

This problem appears to be resolved in Kubuntu 8.10 Release candidate. The boot process now starts kdm and KDE 4.1 does display - not with the best (1024x768) resolution for the savage chip, but with with an adequate resolution (800x600). This can probably be resolved by an adjustment in xorg.conf upon installation of the final release.

I have not installed the RC on my machine, but will likely do so upon receipt of the final.

Thank you for your good efforts, keep up the good work.
