Bug Description

Binary package hint: apt

With the current interpid alternate CD apt-get update returns the following waring:

W: Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Beta i386 (20080930.4)]/dists/intrepid/Release Unable to find expected entry main/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)

The warning does not prevent the upgrade and the files on the cdrom are accessible to apt.

When the CD is added via "apt-cdrom add" in hardy, that works, but give the following message after each apt-get update:

W: Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Beta i386 (20080930.4)]/dists/intrepid/Release Unable to find expected entry main/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I have another upgrade path which fails.

I am already using intrepid and wanted to upgrade using latest image mounted in a directory. This is what I generally do.
I am not using CD but the image directly and have file:// url in sources.list.

I get following warning

Fetched 46.9kB in 8s (5279B/s)
W: Failed to fetch file:///media/ubuntucd/ubuntu/dists/intrepid/Release Unable to find expected entry main/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)

The packages on the image are 'not' available for upgrade.

It's not much critical from my point of view since I am already using intrepid I can wait few more days for a proper image.

The best course of action is probably:

1. re-add the uncompressed Package information in the CD Release file
2. apply the patch in apt-pkg/indexcopy.cc (r1615) to the apt in hardy and move it to hardy-updates
3. add a prerequisites (or a python workaround) to update-manager so that it deal with that automatically

that should fix the described issues on the expense of more work for the upgrader.

I am still facing the problem with latest CD image - 5th Oct. Tried upgrading old image with jigdo but the new one still has supposedly malformed Release file.
And the packages on CD image are 'not' available for upgrade.

Hi there.

Was trying to do an upgrade using today's (10-10-2008) "daily" alternate CD. I also encountered this error and was unable to continue.

Just completed an upgrade with the 15 Oct daily alternate CD build, so I can report that the bug appears to be fixed.
