Bug Description

Binary package hint: ps3-kboot

Currently the welcome message explains how to boot the default system and how to access the kboot shell but doesn't explain that typing 'game' will return the user to the Playstation XMB. It would make it much less scary to new users if this information was detailed right here at the start.

this is really needed big time... I went through:
 boot-game-os
 game-os
 xmb
untill I finially typed "game" as the previous ones did nothing and this really needs to be clear on the boot as to how to return to the game os. one of the problems I'm seeing is it has changed so need to have which one it is and have that be consistant.

Suggested text for the release notes:

"On PS3 to get back to the Sony Playstation 3 XMB operating system from the boot prompt users need to type "game" and press the Return key. If this is for some reason not possible carrying out a hard-reset (see PS3 instruction manual) will return to the XMB on next run."

Release notes text added:

PlayStation 3 issues
There are a variety of other known issues affecting Play``Station 3 systems, documented in more detail in the PS3 release notes. They include:

 * To get back to the Sony Play``Station 3 XMB operating system from the boot prompt, users need to type `game` and press the Return key (bug 277839). If this is for some reason not possible, carrying out a hard-reset (see PS3 instruction manual) will return to the XMB on next run.
 * Users may occasionally see an intermittent shutdown hang with a message like "IRQ 50: nobody cared". The problem has been reported upstream. Press and hold the PS3 power button until you hear 2 beeps will force power off. The system will boot normally on next run (bug 220370).
 * Network``Manager does not list available wireless networks, although it is possible to connect to a wireless network with a known SSID using the "connect to hidden wireless network" option (bug 289977); and it cannot connect to WPA/WPA2 wireless networks, although WEP works (bug 289982).

OK, the text to change is in /etc/kboot.msg on an installed PS3.
However I still don't know which package contains (or creates) this ubuntu specifc file (looked at kboot-installer and ps3-kboot with no luck).
Dan do you know where this is ?

Found it, and it was in kboot installer.
/etc/kboot.msg is created in postint, using these lines:

cat >"$etc/kboot.msg" <<EOF
Ubuntu PS3 KBoot Loader.

Hit enter to boot the default system. You can also use the shell by
typing 'sh'. Exiting the shell returns to the kboot prompt.

EOF

So we either directly replace the XMB explanation in this section, or we handle this differently (maybe so that it becomes easier to find / update and to internationalize).

I will try to advance some more on this, probably using the second option.

Great thanks Arnaud!

After some thought, and based on the fact that kboot is deprecated upstream (replaced by petitboot), I think we should just do the simple change for jaunty.

Here is my first debdiff on the issue, please comment if anything is wrong. Dan can you have a look and / or push it ? Thanks.
