Bug Description

Binary package hint: vlc

Up-to-date jaunty

VLC: 0.9.8a-1ubuntu1

Depends: libx264-59
Which is no longer available in jauntys repo.

apt-cache policy libx264-65 libx264-59
libx264-65:
  Installed: 1:0.svn20081230-0.0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:0.svn20081230-0.0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:0.svn20081230-0.0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/multiverse Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
libx264-59:
  Installed: 1:0.svn20080408-0.0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:0.svn20080408-0.0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:0.svn20080408-0.0ubuntu1 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

work-around is to add intrepid's multiverse repo where that package still is. //thanks to harrykaa.
Without it, users are unable to install vlc.

hello

got the same issue with vlc , mplayer and gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse,
it's in conflicts with libx264.65 instead of libx264.59

workaround only for vlc is to add mrpouit ppa's repos

http://ppa.launchpad.net/mrpouit/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main.

To solve the problem, just get libx264 here:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/fr/intrepid/i386/libx264-59/download

Just installed it manually (sudo dpkg -i libx264-59_0.svn20080408-0.0ubuntu1_i386.deb)

I then installed mplayer and vlc using medibuntu repos.

Same issue here. Shouldn't VLC be rebuilt against newer libx264-65 instead of pulling in an older version?

I'll wait and hope it will be solved sometime, because I think it is unwise to workaround the actually problem in an unstable distribution.

apt-cache rdepends libx264-59
libx264-59
Reverse Depends:
  vlc
  mplayer-nogui
  mplayer
  mpeg4ip-server
  mencoder
  gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse

Should separate bugs be opened for all affected packages, or just against *-59

Even with the latest update to my apt-cache and medibuntu jaunty repo, I can confirm this exists for
smplayer, vlc.

 apt-get install smplayer
depends on mplayer-nogui or mplayer
mplayer: Depends: libx264-59 (>= 1:0.svn20080408) but it is not installable

If I knew where and how to fix and submit, I would do so.

Thanks for making Ubuntu better.
