xmess-x error: compiled byte ordering doesn't match machine byte ordering

Bug Description

I get the following error when I attempt to run xmess.x11:

GLERROR: cannot access OpenGL library libGL.so
GLERROR: dlerror() returns [libGL.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]
Use of OpenGL mode disabled
error: compiled byte ordering doesn't match machine byte ordering.
compiled for MSB first, are you sure you chose the right cpu in makefile.unix?

Running xmess-x 0.106-2.1, lpia architecture. This should be binary-compatible with all x86 code, but perhaps it confused the compiler?

Other OpenGL apps work fine. If I create symlinks from libGL(U).so to libGL(U).so.1, the OpenGL error messages disappear, but the byte ordering error remains, and I am unable to launch the program.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.

xmame has been long discontinued now, and so the package.

Please install mame instead

x-mess is still available in natty (but not in oneiric). Also, I can find no form of mess available in oneiric (in particular, I can find no /usr/bin/mess in the mame package, or in any other package).

Since as far as I can see mess has not been merged into mame upstream, this suggests that the mame package does not provide the functionality of mess.

Reuben Thomas (rrt): I totally agree. If the pacakge can be found in a still supported ubuntu version, it should work at least :) Currently this message mean that there is a major compilation fault (byte order setting) is done by the package maintainer which renders the package totally unusable. Still better to remove, if there is no way to fix this, since currently it's just annoying and made people thinking (including me) that it must be an (x)mame/mess specific error. I've trieded xmame/xmess sdl and x11 versions too: this problem everywhere. I've tried package "mame" but it's not a solution for me since I need the Commodore 65 emulator which is in only mess (if I am correct). Anyway I can compile mame/mess myself too, just to note it would be better to remove totally unusable packages from Ubuntu repositories if there is no will to fix.
