Bug Description

Binary package hint: tasksel

when tasksel is run on ubuntu 8.10 (this was originally a server install)

The following is included in the list of options
"[ ] Ubuntu Studio desktop (must install) "
Why does it say ... must install ? ... I think this might be a bug....(please correct me if must install here means something else..)

Yeah, tasksel-data should say "Ubuntu Studio desktop" instead of "Ubuntu Studio desktop (must install)". Marking as confirmed...

The Ubuntu Studio developers asked for it to be this way, and the bug here is in the Ubuntu Studio seeds. I knew this was going to be a problem for netboot installations sooner or later.

Ubuntu Studio developers: What do you want to do about this? Note that ubuntustudio-desktop is selected by default for Ubuntu Studio installations nowadays, although the question is still asked. I think that should be enough to remove the "(must install)" bit. What do you think?

Colin: I would think anyone running tasksel on a server after an installation would be able to disregard this note. I've had a good many people miss the -desktop option where this is just one bug.

If it's just text, I like having the note there as a reminder. (so people don't deselect it) You know ultimately I'd like the option selected and hidden but if for some reason the "(must install)" part causes issues, go ahead and remove it.

With my recent cd image tests, the ubuntustudio-desktop task option has been visible, and not selected, so it still needs to be selected. If this easy to remedy, I'm all for having it selected by default, and removing the must install note.

The note genuinely does seem to confuse people installing Ubuntu servers who aren't very familiar with Ubuntu.

I've done some work on tasksel so that we can do the following:

  * hide ubuntustudio-desktop
  * continue to always install ubuntustudio-desktop on Ubuntu Studio CDs
  * install ubuntustudio-desktop automatically if any of the other Studio tasks are selected

Here's the seed change to take advantage of this:

use new facilities in tasksel 2.73ubuntu18 to allow us to hide the ubuntustudio-desktop task while still installing it by default on any Ubuntu Studio installations, and whenever ubuntustudio-{audio,audio-plugins,graphics,video} is selected

This bug was fixed in the package tasksel - 2.73ubuntu18

---------------
tasksel (2.73ubuntu18) jaunty; urgency=low

  * Beef up Enhances support to be able to handle disjunctive Enhances. A
    task with "Enhances: a | b | c" will be installed if any of a, b, or c
    are installed.
  * Avoid slow computations due to the fix for LP #150252 when there are no
    tasks to be removed.
  * tests/limited: New test which can be used to select tasks by default
when particular other tasks are listed in tasksel/limit-tasks.
  * Don't explicitly mark enhancing tasks as not to be installed when hiding
them. This will be done anyway by other code in new-install mode, while
in new-install mode we may want to apply a test (such as the new
"limited" test) to an enhancing task that installs it by default even if
the packages it enhances are not installed.
  * Update Ubuntu tasks from seeds; ubuntustudio-desktop now takes advantage
of the above facilities (LP: #148078, #326501).

Just a final note. Testing a disk from March 21st 2009 shows that the -desktop task was indeed selected/hidden. Installation completed and upon boot into the system I had a desktop.

Looks like a success.
