Bug Description
On an up to date dapper, hibernate/suspend fail, and only when laptop is powered by battery.
When trying to suspend/hibernate, screen goes black, there's some hard disk activity, then a pause, and finally laptop stay on, with its hard disk led switched on.
If laptop is plugged to AC power, both hibernate and suspend work.

I have a similar problem on my thinkpad R51 and T21, I think that it has something to do with laptop mode.
How long did you wait? I found it would take upwards of 5mins to hibernate on battery!
If you can switch your screen back on with a function key you may be able to see more.
