Bug Description

On an up to date dapper, hibernate/suspend fail, and only when laptop is powered by battery.

When trying to suspend/hibernate, screen goes black, there's some hard disk activity, then a pause, and finally laptop stay on, with its hard disk led switched on.

If laptop is plugged to AC power, both hibernate and suspend work.

I have a similar problem on my thinkpad R51 and T21, I think that it has something to do with laptop mode.
How long did you wait? I found it would take upwards of 5mins to hibernate on battery!
If you can switch your screen back on with a function key you may be able to see more.

I was not able to switch screen back on, but yes, my laptop finally goes off, after approximately 5 minutes.

But restoration does not work after this suspect suspend. It fails after loading memory data from disk...

Is this with hibernate or suspend, or are you saying the symptoms are exactly the same with both (seems unusual)?

I did some test again today:

- On battery:

laptop goes to suspend in a few seconds, but never come back to life.
hibernate fails, like described in my initial report.

- On AC:

laptop goes to suspend in a few seconds, and goes back on but with a black screen. By pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7, I was able to get back desktop display, with mouse cursor moving, but with interface freezed.

laptop goes to hibernation in 20 seconds, and goes back on in a usable state.

This is probably a dupe of bug 35213.

Can you retest with the latest updates? The problem should be gone.

Tested today with an updated dapper.

Suspend still doesn't work.

Hibernate seems to work fine, except for network, which lost one interface after coming back from each hibernate (First hibernate, I've lost wifi interface, after second hibernate (without reboot in between), I've lost ethernet interface...).

Retested today.

I'm not able to hibernate/suspend anymore...

Each time I try to hibernate/suspend, all I get is the screensaver authentification dialog asking for my password, and after that a notification bubble saying HAL failed and giving me a link to a gnome-power-manager FAQ.

This FAQ doesn't contain any useful information.

I recently upgraded from Breezy and both hibernate and suspend work
flawlessly on my Latitude D610 (Intel 915 Video card).

Sometimes when the computer wakes up from suspend I see the
notification bubble but everything works just fine.

I never installed any unstable version of Dapper, I just upgraded
from the previous stable release.
