Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I have tried to install Jaunty Beta in a Virtualbox machine with 3 HDs:

1) Master (containing jaunty alpha6)
2) Primary Slave (containing a hardy installation)
3) Secondary Slave (containing an intrepid installation)

When using the side-by-side option, it is only possible to choose the 3rd hard disk (secondary slave)

partman-auto only offers the best it can find here, not one choice for each disk.

Would it be possible to look at each hard disk (where hd's are <4) and give
the user one selection from each hd/partition and thus allow the user
to choose which hd/partition they want after seeing
what is available.

The reason I say this is that my entire first drive sda was clean, no
OS on any partition and with two drives the partman always selected
sdb partiton 11 which was the largest partition on both sda and sdb.

So, give the user a list of the largest partitions available on each hd
and let them choose.

I gave some brief implementation advice in bug 1262824, but it would be more useful reproduced here rather than in a duplicate bug:

Yes, the underlying resize_use_free implementation in partman-auto has only ever supported selecting a single disk. To fix this, it would be necessary to refactor it to work something like some_device (so the choices script would only check that it can work at all, while the do_option script would offer a selection of the relevant disks), and then ensure that ubiquity still works with the amended flow.

I suspect that even bug #1361914 might possibly be somewhat related to this.
