Bug Description

UIFE request
------------
The proposed UI change does not break the docs in any way, but the documentation team has still been notified:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-doc/2013-April/017156.html
and two members of the doc team have blessed the change.

Previous description

Binary package hint: evolution

gnome-language-selector isn't clear for the user: the user doesn't understand whether he/she has changed somnething or not. It lack a button saying "save new settings" and a "discard" one.

Besides that, if I add a language with the button "install/remove languages...", it doesn't remember it: it asks me for my password, it checks language availability, but apparently it doesn't install the packages relative to the new language.

When I run gnome-language-selector it tells me that some language package isn't installed. I confirm installation but it doesn't install it.

In my case the package lacking was language-support-translations-it

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. If you could test the current Ubuntu development version, this would help us a lot. If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Please note, that in recent versions of language-selector changes made to the language settings are applied immediately. That was a design decision to simplify the UI and avoid unnecessary mouse clicks.

The second issue you reported, about the packages not being installed, should be reported as a separate bug if this is still an issue. It should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Lucid Lynx. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

The bug still exists. Starting gnome-language-selector and rearranging the order of the languages doesn't do anything. It even doesn't do anything when logging out and back in again. The only time it works as it should is when applying the settings system wide.

Hello,

I have been trying to switch language with gnome-language selector today. I was using a Lubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, which I customized and remixed with Remastersys.

I have installed it in English to a Virtualbox machine, and after that I tried to switch to French. When I opened the gui, the English language from different English speaking countries where presented : "English" in first, the other ones grayed, and at the end of the list "French" was there and greyed too so these ones I could try to click on them, nothing happened.

I tried to change : first went to the next tab and unticked English. Then English packages for locales where removed. Rebooted. Alas the menus where still in English.

I tried again, and again, rebootin between each trial, once starting the program from the console to seek for messages, added libperl-locale, and several other packages in case it would help. Rebooted again and again each time in hope the language would have changed but no go!

I started the program again from console, but this time invoking it with gksu : the result was not better. Anything tried failed, the line for the language was now "French" and was alone there, but the menus where still in English.

As it's Lubuntu, I also tried to erase the menu cache file in ~/.config/menus, but that didn't do it either.

At the end, fed up from trying I went to edit the /etc/default/locale by hand, rebooted, and : yes ! the menus from the panel, from lightdm login screen, and in applications where now in French ! Hurrah !

Well, it seems to me that "Gnome language selector" is a gui application which does nothing.

Do you think it could be reviewed and fixed ? (All users know not how to edit files by hand, or even have an idea that there is a file, and where).

Thank you very much for trying.

It's a drag-and-drop thing. The UI says: "Drag languages to arrange them in order of preference." So you should have dragged the French item to the top of the list.

Removing the English language is never advisable.

If you install the yelp package (not installed in Lubuntu 12.04 by default) you can click the "Help" button on the Language Support UI. In the help document you can read more about how it's supposed to work.

Hi, I realized that much later after reading (too fast I do admit) several times. The method is very easy to use but not common to find in a configuration gui, which might be confusing (when reading too fast... :] )

Therefore I would suggest that this text: "Drag languages to arrange them in order of preference." be written with bold characters in the text

Mélodie,

I changed my mind after our IRC conversation, so I pass on your suggestion about bold text. ;-)
