Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope (RC) with Gnome 2.26.1, fresh installation.

Trying to go to the adress bar in Nautilus (Ctrl + L), typing "ftp://username@server" works, it appears a window asking for the password, like always. But when the Accept button after writing the pass is pressed, a new error window shows up a message like "Nautilus cannot handle 'ftp' places.", and it does not connect. I attach a screenshot os this window.

So now it's impossible to mount a remote FTP volume in Nautilus, but using another FTP client there is no problem.

Thank you for your bug report, can you mount the ftp using gvfs-mount on a command line?

Trying "gvfs-mount ftp://user@server" on command line, I get a "Error mounting location: Operation not supported" error.

is that specific to that ftp server?

affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) → gvfs (Ubuntu)

Oh, god. I was trying different FTP accounts but all in the same server.
I have tried another 2 different FTP accounts which are in different servers and it works fine!
So... could it be a problem of the server? It's strange, it had never caused problems mounting FTP directories with Nautilus...

can you connect those server using an another client? could you "GVFS_DEBUG=1 /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r" on a command line, try to connect in nautilus and copy the log there?

the issue seems to be a server one, it lists UTF8 as a feature but doesn't understand the option

Even if it is a server issue, it seems to affect a lot of them, which makes Nautilus unable to connect to lots of FTP. Also, the server issue was already present before upgrade but connection was possible.

This error should not stop the connexion process. This behaviour should be changed in gvfs I my opinion.

Workaround is available in upstream git repository (master and stable branch), but PLEASE also file a bug against ProFTPd and get the server fixed!

Thank you Andreas. I am waiting for the workaround to be integrate in Ubuntu. Has of now, it is still not working.

I encounter the same problem on Ubuntu 9.04, with the FTP server of a Freebox (an ISP ADSL box).
The FTP server is not accessible via Nautilus, because it stops on the same error message :
<-- 220 Welcome to Freebox FTP Server.
--> FEAT
<-- 211-Extensions supported:
<-- UTF8
<-- 211 End
feature UTF8 supported
--> OPTS UTF8 ON
<-- 500 Syntax error, command unrecognized.
error: Opération non prise en charge
send_reply, failed: 1

It works fine on Ubuntu 10.04 and (I guess) on 9.10, certainly because they use gvfs > 1.3.4, whereas 9.04 uses 1.2.2.

Do you see other workarounds than :
- upgrade to 9.10 or 10.04 : this is probably the best thing to do as 9.04 will soon be unsupported
- use another FTP client

I quickly tried to install the gvfs package of Karmic (version 1.4.1-0ubuntu1) on Jaunty, but failed because it seems to drag too many dependencies upgrade...
