Bug Description

In 9.04 if you "Add/Remove Applications" you find aMule-AdunanzA offered instead of aMule.
aMule is available only through Synaptic.

TEST CASE (for the verification):
1. open add/remove,
2. click on "show all available applications"
3. search for "amule"
4. verify that amule-adunanza is show

5. install the updated app-install-data package from jaunty-proposed
6. close add/remove, open it again
7. repeat step 3
8. veriy that now amule is shown
9. install amule and verify that its the real amule (no italian splash screen)

The aMule-AdunanzA mod has the following defects:
- Works only in a special Italian network. Does not connect for most users.
- No localization, startup splash screen is Italian only.
- Wrong and misleading output, like mentioning www.amule.org as place to look for support. The AdunanzA mod is NOT supported by aMule's dev team.

Therefore I suggest Ubuntu offers aMule instead of aMule-AdunanzA in the application manager.

Cheers,

Stu Redman (aMule developer)

Confirmed.

And: "You forgot that the application has only a italian page for downloads and support, making it retarded to offer it worldwide (but not more retarded than the fact it's ISP-specific)" said by Kry (another aMule developer)

You also accidentally quoted me calling things "retarded", which granted is how I talk and granted everyone in the forum knows it, but has no place in the ubuntu launchpad.

Sorry if anyone got offended by the above quote - it wasn't meant as an insult, but a way of showing emphasis.

As for me it looks strange enough to offer to users some....er, "unusual" Italian fork/mod instead of original aMule "by default" via Add/Remove.

Looks like this fork has been created by Italian people to address specific issues of Italian users of specific ISP which uses non-standard network configurations preventing usual aMule from running properly.

This fork is not properly localized, uses uncommon or Italian-language words, lacks proper English homepage and English documentation. Hence from my standpoint it is unacceptable for general public.

I'm for example able to read English. But I have no knowledge of Italian language. So I can't even read changes log against of original aMule. That's really WEIRD.

I'm personally would call this as, uhm, "sabotage". Why aMule dev's have to deal with all this stuff? And why fixing this fault takes so long? I can guess as the result, aMule dev's and Ubuntu users are f...g brains to each others for no reasons. Please, take steps to stop this. Offering some custom mod by default while it targeted to certain ISP network only is at least IRRESPONSIBLE behavior.

This actually causes extra load on innocent people and makes users perception of Ubuntu worse than it should be.

Thanks for your bugreport.

I uploaded a new app-install-data package to jaunty now that fixes the problem. I needs a SRU verfication so it will take a bit until its available in jaunty-updates. I also ensured that for karmic the amule-AdunanzA is no longer picked up. The files are auto-generated, this is why it got overlooked initially.

Cheers,
 Michael
