@Brad, can you please run this command (please have the offending monitor connected while running the command):
apport-collect 375712
(it will attach additional data about your software, graphics card etc to this bug report)

@Brad, can you please add the line:
Option "AccelMethod" "UXA"
inside the "Device" section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and then reboot the machine and try again.

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)

@Brad, in the next version of Ubuntu we're likely going to have UXA enabled by default so then your resolutions will be detected by default with no changes required in xorg.conf. At the time when we decided which intel driver to ship in jaunty the UXA mode was not yet stabilized for all chipsets so we didn't want to turn it on for all users. If you run into crashes or freeze problems using UXA you can upgrade the default 2.6.3 driver that jaunty has to the 2.7.1 version of that (which is a bit more stable). The 2.7.1 version is available in the X-Updates PPA here: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/

@Martin, I'm just curious to know why you thought enabling UXA could help. Was there a clue in one of the files that apport-collect uploaded? I know that performance issues and sometimes stability issues are solved with UXA, but I haven't seen a monitor resolution problem being fixed with this before.

@Geir, I have a GM965 laptop here that reproducibly exhibits the exact same problem together with a "Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW" LCD panel.

Another more vague clue is that Bryce once asked the question below for another bug (which was originally what made me want to try UXA on that laptop):
