Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

This bug report spans multiple audio systems (esd, arts, alsa, sdl_mixer, and oss, just to name a few).

It's pretty simple: PulseAudio is installed, but never really used. It just kinda sits there, taking up hard-drive space, waiting for an application with PulseAudio support to come along and use it. The PerfectSetup page on PulseAudio's wiki has worked for me on several installations, on two distributions, on at least three different computers. For applications that simply refuse to co-operate with PulseAudio (and anything else, for that matter), pasuspender is a viable workaround.

I've been configuring this every time I install Ubuntu, so it would be extremely convenient if the Ubuntu developers finally did all that configuring by default.

This cannot be the case until all the derivatives (Kubuntu, Mythbuntu, and Xubuntu, namely) ship and use PA by default.

If Ubuntu would "ship and use PA by default" then wouldn't the Ubuntu variants inherit this?

For whatever (perhaps political and/or technical) reasons, those
derivatives have chosen explicitly to exclude pulse. So no, they do
not inherit it (unlike Ubuntu Studio and Edubuntu, which do).

Forgive me for not understanding the interactions between Ubuntu and its variants, but if Ubuntu says "yes we support it," and the variants say "no, we specifically remove it" then isn't it the job of each to do what they say? (For example, if Ubuntu supports PA, it supports it 100% as the default, whereas the variants specifically remove PA, therefore they have some other system as the default.)

Remember that Ubuntu and its derivatives share the same packages.

Again, the authority on this matter is very unclear. Is Ubuntu calling the shots? Is Ubuntu planning on implementing PA but the variants are slow to respond? If the variants are official, and Ubuntu decided to have PA, why don't the variants have it as well?

I hope you understand my confusion. I can elaborate more if need be.
