Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

the gnome-settings-daemon update (2.27.3-0ubuntu2) disabled these touchpad functions:

- no tap clicking
- no vertical/horizontal scrolling

Other people have the same problem:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1221888

Touchpad settings in xorg.conf or via HAL don't fix the problem. (see attached HAL configuration file)

Vertical scrolling works on my laptop as usual,
horizontal scroll doesn't.

Like the forum discussion states, "synclient tapbutton1=1" enables tapping for some.

using "synclient horizedgescroll=1" horizontal scroll acts like an vertical one.
But that may just be an malformed command...

Thank you for your bug report. It seems upstream are using different GConf keys for the touchpad settings now, so gnome-mouse-properties is modifying the wrong keys. We need to port gnome-mouse-properties to the new keys and also make sure gnome-settings-daemon migrates existing configs.

I don't have a touchpad to test this on, although I can largely test the profile migration. Will one of you test this once I've worked on it?

Chris,

btw: I was wrong ... vertical scrolling does work ... i can use a small area on the right side of my
touchpad.

Hmm, something new I just noticed: the latest gnome-settings-daemon FORCES me to choose either two-finger scrolling OR edge-scrolling, and does not allow both -- thus overriding my preference I have set in a custom FDI file! In addition, it's not content to just reset the settings once.... it does it over and over and over again. Can we please add a third possible value for the gconf key?
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/vert_scroll_delta
Current values:
0 - disabled.
1 - edge.
2 - two-finger.
3 - DOES NOT EXIST, should be "both".

If we can't do that, then I'll have to find another way to make Gnome keep its "grubby little hands" off the thing, to use a figure of speech.

er, correction: key is "scroll_method".

Dana - this bug is about making gnome-mouse-properties work with the new gnome-settings-daemon, and making sure that existing configs are migrated correctly. If you have issues with the options available, then please open a separate bug report at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/ .

This is a fairly broken hack but you can work around that setting by setting the gconf key to 1 and then enabling horizontal scrolling in gpointing-device-settings

Changing the key got tap-to-click working again for me :-)

Frank, you can simply use the gconf configuration editor to enable it. Hit alt-f2, run gconf-editor.

Go to desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad and check the tap to click box.

I'm not convinced this is fixed properly -- I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic yesterday and found that my click and scroll settings had not been migrated properly. I got 2.27.5 when I upgraded. I notice that .90 is available now; I'm not sure how to go about testing again, but I can very easily pull my old configuration files out of git if they might help.

no, not enabling it is a choice since it's confusing behaviour and too easy to trigger by error

Um, really? I'd consider tap-to-click to be a basic touchpad feature that would annoy more people by having it missing.

I have to agree with Max. Tap-to-click is "confusing behavior?" It is confusing to try to tap your touchpad, have it not click, be new to the operating system and not know where to look to change the setting. This would be a huge "papercut" if you ask me.

Sounds like a hardware issue, I've never had that. On all other

button or not at hardware level?)

While stardust85 might should considered wording his reply differently, disabling clicking with the touchpad by default is a *very strange* choice. I also installed Karmic Alpha 5, and was baffled that a functionality that works in every other operating system, and every previous release of Ubuntu, was suddenly broken. Heck, it took me a minute realize I should even *try* the buttons below my touchpad. I assumed it was a bug, and after searching, found this report.

while everyone is commenting about this... Does anyone remember the default in Widows ?
AFAIK it also sets the tap-to-click by default to off.

So i dont think it new users will find it difficult or awkward.

Dont get me wrong , i *do* use the tap-to-click and i dont have any problems with it being enabled by default.

But if the commenters here are really interested in setting this as the default it *needs* to be discussed in the mailing list or atleast open a new bug , adding comments to a closed bug is not going to fix anything.
