Bug Description

When using the new version of update-manager to upgrade Breezy to Dapper Beta the update-manager gives you the choice of opening a terminal. If you run X in 800x600 you cannot see the last 1/3 of the dialog because it is outside of the visible area. This, imho, should be considered a bug since you are not able to scale the size of the dialog and should the user be requested for input the said user has no way of knowing this yet even be able to see the possible input. This could break the installation procedure.

I will render it a very serious bug because a some point during the installation process the dialog automatically opens the terminal with no option of restoring to dialog mode.

I cannot confirm this. If I maximize the application, I can see the whole window as well as the other dialogs for the upgrade process. I was able to successfully upgrade to dapper on 800x600.

However, I agree that update-manager is rather large for 800x600 though.

Have you tried opening the terminal window from the opdate dialog - The expander which is placed under the progress bar.

I tried to find a solution. but this seems to be a won't fix. the terminal itself is quite large on a 800x600 desktop. so it would not allow to add further controls.

I have a suggestion. If the installer detects a 800x600 then the terminal should open in a new dialog. Of course this dialog must not be modal.

The user interface should not depend on the resolution. the user should always expect the same interface.

See, that's the problem. You shouldn't have to hit maximize, it should do it for you if it does not fit.

Just doing an upgrade from karmic to lucid, this bug is still apparent.

This is still present during upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 on a 1024x600 netbook screen if user expands the Details ("Podrobnosti" in Slovenian screenshot) section showing the proposed changes to the system. Collapsing it again does not reduce the window size.
The problem is that buttons Cancel ("Prekliči") and Upgrade ("Začni z nadgradnjo") are hidden out of (below) the screen, leaving the user to wonder what he can do. The only obvious choice is to close the window, aborting the upgrade.

Workaround: set focus to "Details" ("Podrobnosti") then press tab once to have the focus on cancel button and once more for upgrade button. Then press enter to trigger the hidden (but now focused) button.

Also after trying to hide the details by clicking the details expander again the window remains too large for the display thereby making it hard to click any buttons.

Is this the same as bug #1072460?

Not exactly. This bug is about the terminal widget causing the update manager not to fit on the screen. #1072460 is about the update window manager growing (again outside the screen) when expanding the details (before upgrade starts) and then not shrinking again when they are unexpanded, leaving the "begin upgrade" button outside the screen.

So both are aspects of the general problem "upgrade-manager does not work well on small screen resolutions", but fixing one does not automatically fix the other.

Comment #9 does seem related to bug #1072460 rather than this bug though. Comment #8 shows this bug.
