Updated Brazilian Portuguese translation for synaptic

Yes and no :)

I've been keeping Debian's Synaptic pt_BR translation up-to-date. I've
opened this bug for Ubuntu when Karmic was still an Alpha because the
pot files are different from Debian to Ubuntu (I don't remember
exactly but mainly the line numbering).
But there are some folks who are used to/responsible for the Brazilian
translations in Ubuntu and someone did use this translation to update
some things but not others. It's quite common to see mistakes in
number (singular/plural) or verb/noun in Brazilian translations from
English since one must be quite used to the English language and also
be somewhat thorough in revising and standardizing the whole document
to avoid them.

I don't use Ubuntu anymore but I did use Karmic from beta until some
time after its release. The translation was ok in terms of not
hampering the usability but since the people responsible for it
weren't careful enough to try to understand why some things were
changed it ended up somewhat messy.

I won't be able to dedicate myself to this now. There are some things
that Ubuntu must improve (mainly in the sense that it has a very large
number of users, many of them willing to contribute, but it's still
managed as if it was from a small number of friends). In this specific
case, if you'd like to have a good pt_BR translation, just take the
one from Debian's latest version (I think it's 0.63-1) and ask someone
to port it to Ubuntu thoroughly.

Thanks for this detailed reply. I'm setting the status of this report to 'Triaged' and going to add a task for 'ubuntu-translations' and let the Ubuntu translators handle it from here.

Thanks for the explanation and for submitting the translation. It only came to the attention of the translations team recently because of the way we've started dealing with translation bugs.

In general, it's best to submit translations directly to the translations team rather than as a patch. This has the benefits that:

* A member of the translation team can easily upload the PO file without the need for developer intervention
* You can simply e-mail it to them
* Launchpad will take care of the merging, you can simply sent the upstream translation.

As far as I know, the Ubuntu Brazilian translation team [1] are very active and integrate collaborating with upstream in their workflow. I'm assigning them the bug report for them to comment or review.

You can see the changes to the upstream translation at, http://tinyurl.com/y9ufus4 - I see there are many changes in comparison with upstream, so perhaps an Ubuntu Brazilian translator might want to have a look at either choosing the Packaged upstream translations or forwarding any corrections upstream?
