This is also the case on my Karmic install (not livecd). It was fine when I tried it about one month ago (?).
However, since about a week ago, the "statusbar" always display [0 installed items]. And no matter what my selection or search in the Software Store is, I always have [0 items available] without any item displayed, and all "departments" are empty.
Synaptic/ Update- manager is working fine.
