Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

system is karmic alpha 6 amd64, nautilus 2.28.

if I choose the icons compact view (or distribution.. I don't know which is the correct translation to english), from preferences menu, in a Nautilus window, the icons are moved to tight positions in the window. But when I deselect the option in the preferences window, the icons are not replaced in the original position.
Even I can't move the icons manually.
Other windows that where not opened when I selected the icons compact view are not affected from this.

Home window and System window are never affected from the normal/compact view, and actually they show bigger icons than the other windows.

Changing the view from icon to compact and back using the combo works fine there

well, I'm definitively suriprised because I made a fresh installation of karmic last 16th of sptember (more or less) and when I realized this problem I tried in different ways (with/without compiz, only folders, only images, and so on), but I always get the same problem.
I made a short video with recordmydesktop, if you want to give it a glance is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OmEteQ4Km8

Thanks, it's clearer with the video you use the preference dialog option on a new folder and not the combo list in the toolbar

I have a similar problem although slightly altered variant of it. I set "compact layout" for home after the installation and turned it off a couple of minutes later. Now /home is the only folder that is displayed in "normal" layout and every other folder has compact layout even though the tick in nautilus options is NOT set. Ticking the compact layout box has no effect other than regrouping the icon names on the desktop from one line to "compact" two lines. The folder view in Nautilus itself is stuck in compact mode except for /home.

Sorry for being so unprecise before, my manners. I experience this bug on a clean install of Ubuntu Karmic Koala that I put on my laptop today. Everything is how it came from the Desktop Install CD and the repository updates provided by Canonical. I have no confirmed this with my Desktop PC also. Every folder I set to "Edit / Preferences / Views / Use Compact Layout" gets individually stuck in compact layout. It seems like it remembers the settings for each individual folder but refuses to "undo" the compact layout setting.

Clearing ~/.nautilus/metafiles/ has no effect on this.

Choosing ""View / Reset Views to Defaults" unsticks the compact option but the functionality is still broken.
