Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

I've set up 3 desktops (workspaces) in openbox. After re-login, only one shows up (on tint2 panel). This is not happening with slim display manager so I'm sure it's a problem with gdm.

gdm: 2.28.0-0ubuntu3
openbox: 3.4.7.2-4
tint2: 0.7.svn.rev174-1 (from killeroid ppa)

It happens with tint2 from ubuntu repo, too. I just installed a newer version to find out, if it was a tint2 problem.

ProblemType: Bug

 SHELL=/bin/bash
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-10.35-generic

Thank you for your bug report, what do you think it's a gdm issue exactly? gdm only runs your sesion

I think so because the problem doesn't occur with another display manager (tested with slim).

I've the same problem: when I logged in, Openbox shows only one desktop instead of the 4 configured in rc.xml.

I'm on Ubuntu karmic with OpenBox 3.4.7.2-4 and gdm 2.28.0-0ubuntu6.

The problem occurs als well under 32bit version. Any news on this? Shall I file a bug against openbox?

I've found a workaround on http://<email address hidden>/msg1707794.html :

put the following in openbox autostart.sh or similar "xprop -root -remove _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS -remove _NET_DESKTOP_NAMES -remove _NET_CURRENT_DESKTOP".

Wow, that does the trick! And at least I was right that this was a gdm issue. Hope it gets fixed...

I think this is being caused by the new version gdm using metacity.

I can confirm this bug too (single desktop in openbox, despite a configuration of 4 desktops)

My set-up is:
  gdm: 2.28.1-0ubuntu1
  openbox: 3.4.7.2-4
  (not using tint at all)

Indeed, this problem did not happen in Ubuntu 9.04. I only experienced it in a fresh install of 9.10.

what Bruno Michel is correct, but you have to make sure to run openbox by running
$ openbox-session
and not
$ openbox
itself. Only with openbox-session the .config/openbox/autostart.sh will be executed. Also see http://icculus.org/openbox/index.php/Help:Autostart

Bruno Michel suggested to include
"xprop -root -remove _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS -remove _NET_DESKTOP_NAMES -remove _NET_CURRENT_DESKTOP"
in the autostart.sh

i'm writing this cause I invoked openbox directly without the session script

Just came from reading bug #400301. Comment 10 in that bug pointed me to a bug which suggests this issue is related to GDM. In that bug, according to comment 4 and following comments[0], it appears that this bug is related to GDM.

Actually it would probably be good to read that whole bug, and maybe the redhat bug that's linked to in comment 2.

It would be nice to know if this has been reported upstream or not, also.

I'm on 64-bit karmic, btw.
