Bug Description

Binary package hint: bootchart

I am using Ubuntu in a virtual machine (KVM) and have linux-image-virtual installed. The system boots in 10 - 15 seconds, the login needs 5 - 10 seconds, but bootchart reports a time of 52 seconds for booting. Except collector nothing is started or doing something in the last 35 seconds (bootchart image attached).

Confirming. If we currently can't determine when the desktop is usable (idle), there shouldn't be a "time" field in the chart. A lot of people get shocked by the high time their systems now need to boot when in fact it's just bootchart that runs longer than before.

boot chart only seems to collect more info , and collects info well into the login .
I dont see why this would be bad. Its just collecting more detailed information.

Right, since our boot time goals are to "completely idle CPU and Disk" we need to run longer than your actual boot to make sure the target is being met.

I recently added a --crop-after option to pybootchartgui (which actually renders the charts), I'll work out which processes are the important ones for each desktop and probably patch bootchart to always call with these

This bug was fixed in the package bootchart - 0.90.2-4

---------------
bootchart (0.90.2-4) lucid; urgency=low

  * Crop the chart down to the first idle period after gnome-panel has
    started. LP: #438015.
    - will need equivalent processes for Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.
  * Remove bootchart-java from recommends, pybootchartgui is the only
    recommended version now.
  * Don't exit with an error when disabled, just stop the job.
    LP: #445836.
