Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

After I upgraded to Karmic beta, when I click "update" in the Update Manager I get a dialog with the following message (see attached screenshot):

"Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Problem executing scripts APT::Update::Pre-Invoke '[ ! -x /usr/lib/ia32-archive/bin/apt-update ] || /usr/lib/ia32-archive/bin/apt-update'Sub-process returned an error code"

This is x64 not not x32 so I'm not sure, why it's trying to run a 32-bit version of apt-update, but the net result is that I can't check for updates with Update Manager but have to run "sudo aptitude update" from the command line. "aptitude update" works fine though, and after doing that, and restarting Update Manager, it shows and installs the updates correctly.

Screenshot of error dialog attached... Please let me know if there's more information that would be helpful.

Here's a tar file of my /etc/apt directory.. I see something suspicious in etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00ia32-libs-tools and etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00ia32-archive but I'm not sure how that got added there or why, all I know is I didn't put it there myself manually.

etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00ia32-archive:

Apt::Update::Pre-Invoke { "[ ! -x /usr/lib/ia32-archive/bin/apt-update ] || /usr/lib/ia32-archive/bin/apt-update" };

etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00ia32-libs-tools:

Apt::Update::Ppost-Invoke { "[ ! -x /usr/lib/ia32-libs-tools/mangle ] || cat /var/lib/apt/lists/*_Packages /usr/lib/ia32-libs-tools/mangle --index >/dev/null" };

Thanks for the additional details.

This looks like its comming from ia32-apt, this is not supported under ubuntu

Ok, if you're sure that's the cause, I'm just not sure how that would have gotten there as I haven't added any nonstandard packages (other than some multimedia pkgs from multiverse, which might be the source of this).

This bug was fixed in the package update-manager - 1:0.126.5

---------------
update-manager (1:0.126.5) karmic; urgency=low

  * DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeQuirks.py:
    - generate note if language-support is incomplete
  * DistUpgrade/DistUpgrade.cfg:
    - stop enabled apport during the upgrade
  * DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeView.py
    - add waitChild implementation from python-apt to ensure
      its working for buggy hardy python-apt
  * DistUpgrade/DistUpgradeQuirks.py:
    - mark mysql-{client,server}-5.0 manual installed in the
      cluster check (LP: #453513)
    - check if running under a vserver setup and error if this
      is the case. upstart does not support this kind of setup
      (LP: #452011)
  * UpdateManager/Core/utils.py:
    - do not show error if DeviceKit.Power is not available
      (LP: #452004)
